Area students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Ball State University.

From Geneva is Casey Gentis. From Bryant is Carrie Fifer, Adam Homan, Megan Houser, David Knoth, Matthew Knoth and Michelle Newton. From Dunkirk is Nicole Byron, Corinne Erwin, Lisa VanSkyock, Lonnie Ward, Ryan Wenger and Nicole Whitesell. From Pennville is Shauna Brown, Brooke Grider and Joseph Vinson.

From Portland is Erin Arnold, Cortney Brinkley, Jaime Comstock, Ashley DeWitt, Cassandra Enyart, Melanie Martin, Brandon May, Beth Muhlenkamp, William Saxman, Hannah Spahr, Darrell Upp and Shanna Young.

From Redkey is Jamie Dragoo and Kristin Janak. From Ridgeville is Jessie Goodhew, Samantha Sheller and Brittany Ullom.

Accepted

Jay County High School senior Nicholas Foreman, son of Michael Foreman and Rhea Holcomb of Portland, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima.

He plans to major in multimedia design.

Teachers meeting

Glen and Beverly Priest and Bob Freemyer of the Jay County Retired Teachers Association recently attended the 40th Annual Representative Assembly of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association (IRTA) in Indianapolis.

The IRTA donates time to community service, donating 1.1 million volunteer hours during 2004. Time donated in 2003 was 991,000 hours, with Jay County teachers having over 7,000 hours.

Summer arts

Registrations are being accepted at Arts Place in Portland for Arts in the Parks, a free summer art program.

Registration forms may be dropped off at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. in Portland or mailed to P.O. Box 804, Portland, IN 47371. Classes begin on Monday, June 13. For more information, call Arts Place at (260) 726-4809.

Minnetrista events

Two workshops with glass artist Steve Sizelove of Richmond will be held at Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie. Participants will learn about crafting hot glass using torches and will be able to try their hand at the craft.

The cost of the class is normally about $100, but a grant from Arts Place of Portland and Arts of Indiana has reduced the cost significantly. For more information or to register, call Tim Gaddie at (765) 213-3549.

A workshop using solid glass to create jewelry with Steve Sizelove will be held on Sunday, May 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The cost is $25 and includes lunch. To register before Friday, May 27, call (765) 213-3549.

To compete

Jessica Loren Busz, 16, a student at Blackford High School, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Pageant to be held in Indianapolis in July. She is active in choir, photography and art and enjoys reading and drawing. Her parents are Connie Newcomer and Larry Aspy, Portland.



Piano students

The National Fraternity of Piano Student’s Guild recently held performances at Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland. Mrs. Louetta Beard from Anderson judged and graded each students performance.
