Support groups to begin in area (10/24/06)

The Alzheimer's Association has begun a new group in Portland for caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Participants will receive emotional support, practical assistance in coping with the issues they face and the latest information about research.
The group will meet the third Tuesday of each montht at 6 p.m. at Jay County Hospital conference room A.

Grieving series
To help those in need of support, State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice in conjunction with St. Vincent Randolph Hospital in Winchester will host a series of "Growing Through Grief" meetings beginning Wednesday, Nov. 1.
The sessions, to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the St. Randolph Hospital meeting room, will continue for six weeks.
A person need not have had an association with the hospice to attend the sessions.
Bereavement support is provided to patient families as part of the hospice care services.
The non-profit program with offices in Greenville, Portland, and Coldwater, cares for about 120 patients daily and serves Darke, Mercer, Preble, Auglaize, Jay and Randolph counties.

Gifts from home
The Jay County Extension Homemakers will host the "Gifts From The Home," workshop on Monday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. and again at 6 p.m.
There will be demonstrations of craft items and food items that can be made for gifts.
Cost for the workshop is $3, which helps cover the cost of printing the booklet tat includes more than just what is demonstrated and any profit from the book is used to purchase of items for Community and Family Services food pantry.
Holiday show
The Delt's annual holiday arts and crafts show is set for Saturday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the commons at Jay County High school.
Dealers from throughout Indiana and Ohio will have booths set up for the show and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Admission is $1 and those under age 12 will be admitted free with proceeds to go to the sorority's community projects.
Benefit auction
Arts Place will hold its annual holiday benefit auction on Friday, Nov. 17, in Goodrich Hall at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St., Portland.
The auction will be one of the events held during the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Winterfest. Doors open at 5 p.m. and bidding starts at 6 p.m.
Admission is free to the public.
Individuals and area businesses donate all auction items which include trips, getaways, gift items, gift certificates, and more. To donate an item or service for the auction, or for more information call Sue Burk at (260) 726-4809.
Auctioneer services are donated by Loy Realty and Auction and refreshments will be provided by First National Bank.
Name to dean's lists
Among those named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, were Sarah Link and Stefanie Wolf.
