Sutter finishes fourth in opener

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Elle Sutter plans on making it back to the state meet. She got off to a good start in that quest in the Tribe’s season opener.
Sutter finished fourth at Tuesday’s Mercer County meet hosted by Marion Local, leading the Fort Recovery High School girls cross country team to a third-place finish in the six-team field. The boys team was sixth.
Sutter, who was a state qualifier during her freshman season, ran a time of 21 minutes, 18 seconds to open her junior campaign. Abby May was 11th in 22:50 followed by Jessica Vogel (12th – 22:51), Caitlyn Huelskamp (16th – 23:52) and Katie Braun (33rd – 25:32).
Derek Sutter, a regional qualifier last season, was the top runner for the FRHS boys, finishing in 19 minutes flat for 15th place. Joey Gonzalez was 24th in 19:51 ahead of Nathan Fullenkamp (30th – 20:44), Mitchell Homan (42nd – 22:06) and Isaac Siegrist (43rd – 22:11).

Panthers defeat SA
MARION — The South Adams volleyball team split the first two games for the second straight night, only to fall 25-20, 14-25, 25-15, 25-23 to the host Eastbrook Panthers.
The Starfires, who lost in four games Tuesday to Jay County, got 12 assists, eight kills, two digs, two aces and a block from sophomore Cady Farlow. Junior Alyssa Bluhm added 10 kills and six aces.
Freshman Kylie Grabau had five kills in her first varsity match, and Lauren Smith finished with four digs.
SAHS dropped the junior varsity match in three games.

Fort golfers fall
SIDNEY, Ohio — The Indians couldn’t keep up with the host Anna Rockets as they fell 168-192 Tuesday at Shelby Oaks Golf Club.
Junior Elijah Kahlig had four of Fort Recovery’s five pars, including three in a row to close out his round. He led the team with a 41.
Brad Boyd earned medalist honors with a 39 for Anna, which had three rounds of 42 or better.
Kent Retz finished with one par as he followed Kahlig for the Indians (1-6) with a 49. Derek Backs added a 50, and Bryce McAbee completed the team score with a 52.

Stars fall to Bellmont
DECATUR — South Adams’ girls soccer team is still looking for its first win after falling 6-1 Tuesday to the host Bellmont Squaws.
Bellmont (1-1) rolled out to a 3-0 lead before the Starfires scored their lone goal. Michaela Rupp, a junior, found the net for SAHS (0-4) on an assist from Olivia Turner late in the first half.
The Squaws scored three more goals in the second half for the final margin.
Samantha Sprunger, Rachel Simon and Rupp each recorded one shot on goal for the Starfires. Alaina Johnston faced a barrage of shots, finishing with 37 saves.

FRMS takes second
MARIA STEIN — The Fort Recovery Middle School girls track team finished second in the Mercer County Meet Tuesday at Marion Local. The boys team was last out of five teams.
Angela Heitkamp led the girls team to its runner-up finish as she placed second in 14 minutes, 20 seconds. Grace Gehle was fourth in 14:33 followed by Paige Hemmert (18th – 15:53), Heather Klenke (19th – 16:23) and Madison Kaiser (24th – 17:24).
Harrison Kaup and Jared Heitkamp placed 22nd and 23rd respectively in the boys race in 15:10 and 15:20. Ty Francis was 28th in 16:01) ahead of Eddie Hemmert (31st – 16:17) and Rodney Hemmert (32nd – 16:28).[[In-content Ad]]
