Sutter opening Celina IGA (6/12/04)

Business roundup

The owner of Ole Fort IGA in Fort Recovery soon will open a new store in Celina, Ohio.

John Sutter has purchased the former Big Bear supermarket location at 725 W. Logan St. The Logan Street IGA is scheduled to open in late July, The Celina Daily-Standard reported recently.

The store, along with another former Big Bear location, was closed earlier this year as part of Big Bear parent company Penn Traffic’s decision to close the entire Big Bear chain.

The new store will feature fresh meats and the same pricing structure maintained at the Fort Recovery store, Sutter said.

The site is being remodeled, including new cases, flooring, heating and air conditioning, store fronts and signs, as well as a new scanning system at the checkouts.

Celina native Gary Stone will be store manager, and the store will employ 25 to 30 workers.

The new store will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Ohio time), and it will be closed Sundays.

YEAR-END REPORT

Marsh Supermarkets Inc. has reported its sales and net income figures for its fiscal year ending March 27.

Net income for the fiscal year was $3,037,000 or 38 cents per diluted share. That compares to $52,000 or one cent per diluted share last year. Last year’s numbers reflect a non-cash charge of $3,639,000 related to an accounting rule change.

Operating income for fiscal 2004 improved to $23,645,000, compared to $22,634,000 last year. Retail sales in comparable supermarkets and convenience stores were down 1.4 percent from last year. Excluding gasoline, comparable store merchandise sales declined 2.5 percent from last year.

The company attributed the decline to a continuing weak local economy, high unemployment, and competitive new supermarket square footage.

During the fourth quarter of its fiscal year, Marsh opened a new “lifestyle” store in a new market, closed two Village Pantry locations, and converted one Marsh Supermarket to a LoBill Foods supermarket.

“I believe that fiscal 2005 will be a remarkably better year,” said Don E. Marsh, chair (Continued on page 5)
