Swiss Village celebrates 35th year (9/20/03)

Swiss Village in Berne will celebrate its 35th year in business today with a celebration service in the auditorium at 2 p.m., followed by an open house.

Swiss Village opened on May 27, 1968, and since then has grown into a first-class retirement facility for the elderly. The original 52-bed healthcare building has expanded numerous times.

The south resident building was constructed in September of 1971 and the west wing assisted residential area was completed in 1976. And from 1979-83, three more residential wings and the auditorium where added. Expansion has continued over the past twenty years, with more residential buildings added to the facility and the renovation of the administration buildings to add dining rooms, kitchen and activities space. A daycare was added in 2001 and is capable of serving more than 40 children.

Currently, Swiss Village has five different levels of care: Healthcare, dementia care, residential, assisted residential and independent living apartments and condos. Swiss Village provides direct care or services to more than 360 residents and 45 children. The not-for-profit organization is operated by a 10-member board of directors and employs over 300 people to help provide care to its residents.
