Taste of Jay County set for next week

Tickets are still available for the second annual Taste of Jay County.
The event will take place Oct. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Jay Community Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
Tickets may be purchased from the Jay County Chamber of Commerce, Flower Nook or Marsh Hometown Market.
The event will feature fare from several local restaurants and caterers.

Payments delayed
Due to bank and government observance of Columbus Day, unemployment insurance benefits will not be posted on debit cards on Monday, Oct. 11. 
Payments for eligible vouchers filed on Sunday, Oct. 10, and Monday, Oct. 11, will be posted to individual debit cards by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Energy seminar
Jay County REMC is hosting an energy efficiency seminar Oct. 21.
Susie Schutz and Paula Davidson, CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union; Sharon Wall, Wall Tax Service; Scott DeHoff, DeHoff Insulation; and Timothy Ball, Carrier, will present during the seminar on how to reduce energy costs and finance home improvements.

Buys bank
Old National Bancorp has announced it will purchase Bloomington-based Monroe Bancorp in an $83 million deal.
Monroe Bank has 15 branches and $850 million in assets and will combine with Old National, the third largest bank branch in Indiana boasting 165 branches and $7.7 billion in assets.
A date for the merger has not been announced.
Smoother transfers
Ivy Tech Community College is continuing work to make it easier for students to transfer to four-year colleges.
The college has assigned “transfer advocates” to each of its 14 regional campuses around the state. The advocates will be able to field questions from students on all topics about transferring to other colleges or universities.

Sales up
Walgreen Co. announced that same-store sales increased .4 percent in September against expectations that sales would decline.Front-of-store-sales also continued to improve for the largest U.S. drugstore chain as the company has improved outside the pharmacy.

Yum profits

Yum Brands Inc. reported third-quarter earnings of 6.9 percent boosted by sales in China for the company which includes KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.
Sales in China climbed 6 percent as operating profit from China accounted for 49 percent of the company’s total. The company has targeted oversees group to help bolster bottom line in a cool U.S. market.
U.S. sales only increased 1 percent driven by Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, while KFC sales faltered, declining 8 percent.

Supplier sold
Berne auto-parts maker Camryn Industries was recently sold to Visionary Technologies for an undisclosed price.
The plant’s 250 workers will be shuttered but will be able to reapply for work under the new owner. About 200 workers are represented by Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board Local 295C.
The plant mainly produces side-view mirrors and workers are paid an average of $14 per hour.

Squawk Box
Old National Bancorp CEO Bob Jones appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box program Friday.
The show, a pre-market news and talk program, focuses on business and economic news.

Union City awards
Union City recently received two awards from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.
The awards include a designation as a IACT Green Community for its efforts to promote wind power as well as other green initiatives. The second award was for the town’s cooperation with Randolph Eastern School Corporation to bring wind turbines into the area.

Gas City jobs
Furniture distributor Munire Furniture Inc. announced plans to establish its manufacturing headquarters in Gas City, a move than could bring 350 jobs by 2013.
The New Jersey-based distributor produces cribs, dressers and other household furniture. The company will invest $5 million to purchase and outfit the former Amcast building as the new production site.
The company will begin production in November. The company was offered $1.35 million in performance based-tax credits and $20,000 in training grants from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

Tyson donation
Tyson Foods Inc. and Wal-Mart are taking part in the No Kid Hungry in Arkansas campaign with a 90-ton food donation and $150,00 donation.
Tyson donated 180,000 pounds of food in six truckloads to six major food banks and Wal-Mart contributed the money to assist the hunger initiative.
The No Kid Hungry in Arkansas program aids at-risk children throughout the state, where 25 percent of children are living below the poverty line.
