Teacher of the Year ballots being accepted (02/14/06)

Ballots are being accepted at Wal-Mart for the Teacher of the Year grant, awarded annually to recognize outstanding local teachers and the schools where they teach.
Students may vote for their favorite teacher at the courtesy desk through Feb. 27. A $1,000 grant will be awarded to the school and the teacher will receive a $100 shopping card.
Spellers to compete
Shannon Springer won the Spelling Bee at West Jay Middle School and Wil Masters was the runner-up. Shannon is a sixth grade student and the daughter of Jim and Becky Springer, Dunkirk. Wil is an eighth grader and the son of Mike and Debbie Masters, Redkey.
They will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March, 18, at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie.
Library events
The Jay County Reads program, a community-wide reading program, will feature its second book “Pay It Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde. The book may be purchased at the Jay County Public Library for $2 beginning Monday, Feb. 20. It is to be read in March, discussed in April and the group will meet with the author in May.

A two-part program on knitting will be offered at the Jay County Public Library on Monday, Feb. 27, and Monday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. Gretchen Young and Martha Read will demonstrate the basics of knitting and teach participants to make a scarf. Interested persons need to bring size 10 knitting needles and four ounces of knitting-worsted weight yarn.

Can drive held
The Fort Recovery FFA Chapter held a canned food drive, with classes competing to see who could bring in the most cans. Approximately 750 canned goods were collected and the third period senior class collected the most cans, an average of 15 per person. The food was donated to needy families around Mercer County.
Dean’s list
Beth Siegrist has made the dean’s list at Ball State University for the fall semester of 2005. She is the daughter of Diane and Joe Siegrist, rural Jay County.
Sara Ronald has made the dean’s list at Indiana University in Bloomington for the fall semester of 2005. She is the daughter of Connie and Jack Ronald, Portland.

The Giant Spin-In will be held March 9 through 11 at Jay County Fairgrounds.
Classes will be offered in needlefelting, creating a shadow box and felt hats, spinning, rughooking, spindling, stained glass, plying and weaving.
Registration forms are available at the Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau and must be returned by Feb. 27 to Columbia City.
Governor’s Award
The Indiana Humanities Council is accepting nominations for Indiana’s top recognition award for young leaders — The Governor’s Award for Tomorrow’s Leaders.
Nominated candidates must be Indiana residents between the ages of 19 to 29, who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in the entrepreneurial, community, educational and cultural fields.
Winners will be recognized at a luncheon at the Indiana Leadership Summit in Indianapolis on June 8 and will receive a $1,000 scholarship or donation to a charity of their choice.
