Teams compete in Academic Super Bowl
Taking Note
East Jay Middle School Academic Teams competed Saturday against 14 other schools at the Academic Super Bowl at Union County Middle School. The topic was "An American Generation: 1964-1980."
The English team, consisting of Randy Fortkamp, Amber Huelskamp, Jessica Kerrigan, Ian McClung and Ian Nesbitt-MacDonald, placed first in its division and second overall.
The Math team, consisting of Austin Wendel, Darren DeRome, Rick Fortkamp, Mitchell Kunkler and Lillian McClung, placed first in its division and second overall.
The Social Studies team, consisting of Rick Fortkamp, Owin Buschur, Ian McClung, Hunter Prescott and Julie Schubert, placed first in its division and tied for third overall.
The Science team, consisting of Collin Saxman, Darren DeRome, Chandler Jacks, Randy Fortkamp and Travis Osterholt, placed second in its division and tired for fourth overall.
The Interdisciplinary team, consisting of Zane Shreve, Randy Fortkamp, Rick Fortkamp, Austin Wendel, Ava Kunkler, Kylie Osborne and Robert Myers, placed first in its division and tied for second overall.
The teams were coached by Deborah Kilander and team proctor was Connie Williams.
West Jay Middle Schools Academic teams placed third in English; second in Social Studies; third in Math and Interdisciplinary.
United Way grants
United Way of Jay County gave grants to the following organizations from undesignated funds or from pledges which were designated by the donor for the 2009-10 campaign:
Youth Development and Emergency Services: Anthony Wayne Boy Scouts-$3,000; Jay County Boys Club and Jay County Girls Club-$14,000; American Red Cross-HHC-$6,000; Jay County Salvation Army-$4,500; Girl Scouts-$2,500.
Health Services: Jay County Cancer Society-$8,000; CFS Well Child (STD-Clinic)-$6,000; CFS Health Coalition-$6,000.
Community Resources: Bryant Community Center-$5,500; Pennville Community Center-$1,500; Redkey Community Center-$1,500; West Jay Community Center-$7,000; Jay County Scout Facilities-$5,000.
Special Needs and Social Services: Jay County Association of Crippled C&A-$250; Jay-Randolph Developmental Services-$7,500; Jayland Arc-$1,500; Youth Services Bureau-$3,000; Second Harvest Food Bank-$4,000
Dean's list
Two Portland residents made the dean's list at Rose-Hulman for the winter quarter.
Jessica Muhlenkamp, the daughter of Allen and Theresa Muhlenkamp. She is a junior majoring in civil engineering.
Jacob Schmidt, the son of Gary and Diane Schmidt. He is a junior majoring in software engineering.[[In-content Ad]]
