Teen back from space camp

Thomas Bowen, son of Jeff and Teresa Bowen, Portland, recently graduated from the U.S. Space Academy held at the U.S. Space and Rocketry Center in Huntsville, Ala. He is a seventh grader at East Jay Middle School.

The six day curriculum is an intense study in the principles of aerospace technology, space exploration and discovery as applied to the space and rocketry program.

Bowen was a member of the Axle Team, which was required to build a robot that could provide oxygen, dock a logistics module, engage a back latch to an astronaut and deploy a solar array in the simulated space station. The Axle Team received an Outstanding Team award for their efforts.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

The Fifth Harvest Biennial, a regional juried exhibition to be held at Arts Place, Inc., Portland, from Oct. 4 through Nov. 15, is looking for interested artists to display their craft.

The exhibition schedule is as follows:

• Sept. 15 — All slide submissions due.

• Sept. 16-17 — Delivery dates for all hand delivered art.

• Sept. 22 — Notice of acceptance by phone or email.

• Oct. 1 — All accepted works delivered.

• Oct. 4 — Opening reception, 6 p.m.; presentation of awards, 6:30 p.m.

• Nov. 15 — Final day of exhibition.

• Nov. 17 — Pick up date for hand-delivered art.

• Nov. 26 — Return date for all shipped art.

OKTOBERFEST

The Oktoberfest of Indianapolis will be held Aug. 29-31 and Sept. 5-6 at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian St. Hours are 4 p.m. to midnight with ticket prices at $5. Kids under 10 are admitted free.

Highlights of the festival are authentic German food and music, beer and wine garden, crafts, dancing, cultural displays, carnival rides and games.
