Tennis sectional semifinal moved to Saturday (09/29/06)

Local roundup

MARION - Jay County's road to the boys tennis sectional championship continues to shrink.

In recent years the Patriots have drawn the opening match, setting them up for three consecutive days at Marion. They got the bye this year, limiting their possible bus rides to the Grant County school to two. Now, thanks to rain Thursday night, if they bring home the sectional championship it will all happen in one day.

Thursday's opening match between Mississinewa and Marion was rained out, thus moving back the entire tournament. Those two schools will now play today at 4:30 p.m., with the winner to play Madison-Grant in one of two semifinal matches Saturday at 9 a.m. Jay County and Blackford will play in the other semifinal match.

The championship match, originally scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m., will be played Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Patriots, who finished the regular season at 11-4 after being rained out at Bellmont Wednesday, enter as the favorite to repeat as sectional champions. They defeated Marion 3-2 in the 2006 season opener, and topped Blackford 4-1.
