Third annual spin-in set for fairgrounds (01/27/06)

The Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau will hold its third annual Giant Spin-In on Saturday, March 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jay County Fairgrounds. The event will feature fiber artists and vendors of all kinds of fibers.

Classes will also be available on Thursday, March 9; Friday, March 10, and Saturday. For a complete list of classes, brochures are available at the Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau, 118 S. Meridian St. in Portland; call (260) 726-3366 or visit www.visitjaycounty.com. Registration for classes are due by Feb. 27.

A home school educational day will be Friday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be sheep shearing demonstrations, hands-on felt making and spinning on a CD spindle. Each child will also receive a wool sample.

Library events

Stephanie Arnold will demonstrate ways to start and maintain a successful fitness plan on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. at Jay County Public Library. Arnold is fitness director at the Jay Community Center. The program is free and is for teens and adults. For more information, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

Also on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. the library will host a healthy cooking program with Linda Frantz. Participants will be mixing, chopping and tasting. The program is for teens and adults and registration is required. There will be a $3 charge for cooking ingredients. To register, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

Open house

LifeStream Services Inc. and Portland Place will present a free workshop to inform the community on issues concerning seniors.

The workshop will be Friday, Feb. 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Portland Place, 430 W. Lafayette in Portland. Registration and refreshments will begin at 12:30 p.m.

There will be presentations on Medicaid Eligibility and Estate Planning by attorney Bill Lutz and Alternative to Nursing Home facility placement by Julia Anderson.

Bird watch
