NEW CASTLE - For the second straight season the Patriots pushed New Castle to its limits. But they still couldn't knock over the third-ranked team in the state.
The Class 3A No. 3 host Trojans hit 15 fourth-quarter free throws to hold off the charge from the Jay County girls basketball team Thursday for a 58-54 victory. New Castle won last season's game at Jay County, 52-50.
Jay County (9-3) led 13-10 after the opening quarter, and stayed ahead after a rim-rattling second quarter which saw each team score just four points. But the Trojans came alive with a 21-point third quarter to take the lead, and pushed ahead by as many as 12 points. The Patriots rallied to within four only to have New Castle bury 15-of-20 free throws in the fourth quarter to improve to 12-2.
Only five Trojans scored, but four of them reached double figures. Sophomore Macey Elyea led the effort with 21 points.
Corie West scored 13 points, and Mandy Blake and Allison Reece each had 10. Blake was 7-of-8 from the foul line in the final period and West hit 6-of-7 fourth-quarter free throws.
Jay County was led by a sophomore as well as Kaelee Keller tossed in 15 points. She also had five rebounds.
Senior Sara Garringer, returning to the court for the first time since suffering a knee injury Nov. 21 against Mississnewa, had nine points. Whitney Homan finished with seven points and seven rebounds, Nicole Pfeifer had seven points and Abby Loy notched three assists.

Makenzie Loy had all of her team-high eight points for the Patriots in the middle two quarters. She also grabbed eight rebounds, and Pazia Speed added seven points.
