Three Chiefs take 1st place

CRAWFORDSVILLE — Nick Lairson, Matt Blackford and Mitchell Bruggeman all won championships for the East Jay Middle School wrestling team, which closed its season Saturday at the Southmont Super 15 Invitational.
Lairson racked up five victories to earn his title at 155 pounds. Blackford (135) and Bruggeman (110) each finished at 4-0.
Adding second-place finishes for the Chiefs were Henry Hemmelgarn (85), Colten Compton (95), A.J. Bryan (110), Tyler Leonhard (130) and Andy Kohler (177) all at 3-1. Ivan Hemmelgarn (95) and Levi Hummel (145) each finished 3-1 and placed third.

Starfires go 3-2
LIGONIER — South Adams’ middle school wrestling team went 3-2 Saturday to finish ninth at the West Noble Invitational.

The Starfires defeated Concord 61-60, New Haven 75-56 and Northridge 65-48. They lost 60-49 to East Noble and 75-34 to Westview.
Wyatt Miller, Kam DeLong and Gage Conner all finished undefeated at 5-0 on the day.
Chance Sprunger, Kody Coates, Taylor Cueller and Isaiah Baumgartner added 4-1 marks, and Kadin Gerber, John Gatto, Josh Lahr and Grant Shaffer each finished 3-2.

Panthers place 2nd
The Jay County Panthers and Bobcats Special Olympics basketball teams competed Feb. 18 in the Grant County Take it to the Hoop tournament.
The Panthers finished as the tournament runners-up. Mark Knipp and Josh Griffin of the Panthers and Darren Martin and Kurtis Atkinson of the Bobcats all won sportsmanship awards.[[In-content Ad]]
