INDIANAPOLIS — Trip 3s with a 4 kicker.

That would make a pretty good Texas Hold ’Em hand, and it definitely made for a good day for the Jay County cheerleading squads.

The East Jay Middle School, Jay County High School junior varsity and JCHS varsity squads all placed third at the Indiana State Fair cheerleading competition Saturday with scores of 214, 206.5 and 201 respectively. West Jay Middle school again finished back-to-back with East Jay, placing fourth with 197 points.

“Very happy,” said East Jay coach Kelley Fraze of her feelings on another top-three finish, “especially since Hamilton Southeastern was here this year and they weren’t here last year. They’re always very difficult and perfect and you expect them to win. ... We were where I expected us to be.”

East Jay and West Jay were second and third last season. The Jay County middle schools finished behind Hamilton Southeastern and defending champion Eastside (Anderson) this year.

“The girls have been wonderful, awesome to work with,” said West Jay coach Cherie McCallister. “We got a late start this year, so we had to kind of really push. This is their first competition together as a team. They’ve done a wonderful job.”

Jay County coach Mindy Weaver said she thought both the JV and varsity groups put together their best efforts.

“One thing as a coach coming to state fair is what I want when they’re done the girls to feel good about their performance and the junior varsity did,” she said. “They did have a couple slight bobbles, but overall we thought it was probably one of our strongest performances.

“(Varsity’s) definitely was the best performance of the summer. One thing I hate to do is make a lot of last-minute changes, but boy, we’ve had to do a lot of that this year. The girls handled them very well.”

Anderson Highland and Springs Valley went one-two in the junior varsity division and traded the top two spots in small varsity.

The varsity squad put up the top point total of the four Jay County groups thanks to consistent numbers up-and-down the three judges’ score sheets. It was near perfect in projection - voice/expression in which it picked up 14 out of a possible 15 points.

The Patriots earned 24 of a possible 30 points in five other categories.

Jay County’s junior varsity saw its best numbers in fundamentals - motion technique (13 out of 15), jumps and degree of difficulty (24 of 30 in both).

“One thing I wanted to do this summer was challenge all the girls,” said Weaver. “That was a big thing this year. Both of these routines we needed every girl doing everything she could do. ... Maybe that made this summer a little more enjoyable for all of us.”

Projection was easily the top scoring category for East Jay. The Chiefs were perfect, picking up 15 out of 15 points. They also scored 24 out of 30 in jumps.

“I thought we did a very good routine, one of the best ones we’ve done,” said Fraze. “(There were) just a few mistakes, but I wasn’t expecting perfection so we did as well as we could I thought.”

West Jay, which again was in the top four after landing out of the top 10 in 2003, closed the gap after scoring 19 points behind East Jay last season.

The Eagles also saw good projection numbers (13 out of 15) and scored 23 out of 30 in overall execution - precision of moves/timing and showmanship/spirit.

McCallister also said she was happy with her squad’s stunts.

“They nailed every mount that we’ve done throughout the summer,” she said. “That was the most impressive thing to me.”

The most impressive thing overall is the continued success of the county’s squads. They all finished in the top four at the state fair competition for the second straight season following an East Jay title in 2002 and a JV championship in 2003.

“We have 56 girls participating from the whole county,” said Weaver. “That’s pretty exciting. And it was exciting to see all the girls routing for each other and coming together. That’s good for cheerleading in Jay County.”[[In-content Ad]]
