Guilty pleas

A Dunkirk man pleaded guilty to class D felony driving with a blood alcohol content of .15 percent or more on Aug. 26 in Jay Superior Court.

Eric D. Smith, 41, is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 19 at 9 a.m.

He was arrested on Oct. 2, 2002, after being pulled over by Indiana State Police.

The charge was enhanced to a felony because Smith had a prior conviction.

A Memphis, Texas, man pleaded guilty to class C felony nonsupport of a dependent on Aug. 25 in Jay Circuit Court.

Ronnie Roderick, 30, is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 25 at 3 p.m.

He was arrested in Feb. 2002 in Texas. At the time of his arrest he was allegedly more than $15,000 behind in child support payments.

Still out

Thousands of homes and businesses across northern Indiana remained without power Thursday, two days after a tornado and straight-line winds of more than 80 mph snapped trees and power lines, The Associated Press reported.

About 19,500 American Electric Power customers were without electricity Wednesday, including 16,000 in St. Joseph County, 2,600 in Elkhart County and 890 customers in Monroe, about 20 miles south of Fort Wayne.

Schools were scheduled to open Thursday in South Bend, but officials postponed the first day of classes until Tuesday because of concerns about transporting children and doubts about whether all buildings would have power.

The tornado touched down Tuesday near Marian High School in Mishawaka, less than a mile from the eastern edge of South Bend. The tornado ripped a path about 100 yards long by 100 yards wide, meteorologist Aaron Stevens said.

There were no reports of injuries.

The tornado had winds of 73 to 112 mph, or an F1 on the Fujita scale, which measures the strength of tornadoes from F0 as the weakest to F5 for the strongest.

Most damage, however, was done by straight-line winds of more than 80 mph, Stevens said.

South Bend had more than 190 city employees working 12-hour shifts to help clean up the mess. The city also hired outside contractors to help with the cleanup effort.

Deaths

Helen M. Crist, 87, Bradenton, Fla., a former resident of Fort Recovery.

Julia Ann Wine, 64, Hartford City, mother of a Penn-ville resident.

Richard A. Hunt, 71, Winchester, a native of Ridgeville.
