House fire
A vacant house in Pennville caught fire early this morning, resulting in a total loss.
Pennville firefighters responded to a call at 4:15 a.m. to find flames shooting out the windows of the home at 175 N. Union St. The property is owned by Larry Fitzgerald, Indianapolis.
Eighteen firefighters responded to the call and were on scene for about three hours.
Pennville town marshal Ralph Frazee said there were no utilities at the home and the cause of the fire is "suspicious." The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Deer vs. car
A rural Portland woman's vehicle was struck by a deer in Madison Township on Wednesday.
Marla S. Vermillion, 45, 8533 South 600 East, told Jay County police she was driving north on county road 600 East, just south of county road 800 South, and a deer struck the passenger side of her 1999 Buick Century.
The 6:35 a.m. accident caused damage estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.
Mailboxes damaged
Two rural Portland residents told police that someone heavily damaged their mailboxes.
Phil Bailey, 1875 West 200 South, and Jeff Bailey, 1883 West 200 South, told Jay County police that their mailboxes were damaged between 9 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday. The mailboxes were side by side.[[In-content Ad]]
