Dear Santa

Area children are invited to share their letters to Santa Claus for publication in the Thanksgiving issue of The Commercial Review.

Letters received by Nov. 24 will appear in The CR on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Tickets are still available for a dinner Saturday night commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Jay County Boys Club.

Portland native and renowned entertainer Jack Imel, a star of the Lawrence Welk Show, will be the featured speaker at the event, which will begin at 6 p.m. at White Linen Hall, 121 N. Meridian St., Portland.

Tickets are $20, and proceeds will go towards the ongoing expansion of the Jay Community Center.

Speaking

United States Marine Corps Lt. Col. (Retired) Russell J. McCurdy, a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, will speak Sunday at 2 p.m. at The Museum of the Soldier, 510 E. Arch St., Portland.

The appearance is part of the museum’s celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps.

Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students and seniors, and free for museum members and those younger than 10.

Lt. Col. McCurdy, then a private, was assigned to the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor, and was one of only 15 Marines to have survived the bombing. He is one of only three Marines still alive today.

After attending Officer Candidate School in 1943, he served with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Tank Battalion. He currently lives near Huntington.

The museum will be open Sunday from noon until 5 p.m., with a special exhibit of USMC uniforms and related items. Admission to the museum is the same as for the lecture.

Weather

For those wondering where the fall weather has been, the wait is apparently over. Lows tonight will dip into the upper 20s, with highs Friday under partly cloudy skies expected to reach only the mid 40s. Winds will be from the west at 5 to 15 mph.

The high temperature Wednesday at the Portland weather observation station was 62. The low was 39, and the temperature at 7 a.m. today was 41. A trace of rain was recorded between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today.

Lows overnight Friday will dip into the low to mid 20s under clear skies.

Highs Saturday will be in the low 40s with light northeast winds. Saturday night’s low is expected to once again be in the 20s.

Sunday’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 40s. There is a 40 percent chance of rain Sunday night, with lows in the upper 30s.
