Half-day

The Jay School Corporation will have the first of its four half-day Staff Development Days on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Students in each building will be served lunch prior to being dismissed. Dismissal times are: West Jay and East Jay Middle schools, 12:20 p.m.; Jay County High School, 12:35 p.m.; and elementary schools will dismiss between 11:20 and 11:40 a.m., according to individual building dismissal times.

The three other Staff Development Days are Friday, Jan. 16; Wednesday, Feb. 18; and Monday, April 26. Latchkey services will be provided on each of these dates.

Sentenced

A Celina, Ohio man was sentenced on Oct. 1 in Jay Superior Court for class D felony driving while intoxicated.

Kenneth L. Barker, 74, was sentenced to 18 months in the Jay County Jail with all but six months suspended and credit for time served. Barker will serve his six months on electronically monitored home detention.

He was fined $150 and ordered to pay $132.50 in court costs.

He also was placed on probation for 18 months and his driver’s license was suspended for two years.

The charge was enhanced to a D felony charge because Baker had a DUI conviction within five years.

He was arrested on Dec. 27, 2001 after he was pulled over by Portland police.

Enforcing

Police in Ohio — including departments from Fort Recovery and Mercer County — are increasing enforcement of laws for motorized scooter and golf cart use.

A recent ruling from the Registrar of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles states that motorized scooters must be properly titled and registered under Ohio law. To be titled, scooters must meet federal safety standard guidelines and the state’s definition of a motorcycle, which is “every motor vehicle, other than a tractor, having a saddle for the use of the operator and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground.”

Verbal warnings will be issued in Fort Recovery until Oct. 15 then citations will be given. Fort Recovery Chief of Police Maggie Hartings encourages residents with questions to call the police department at (419) 375-2662 or e-mail her at [email protected]

Deaths

Alvin L. Schoenherr, 76, Fort Recovery.
