GIRL INJURED
A 7-year-old Dunkirk girl was injured Wednesday afternoon when her bicycle collided with a car at the intersection of Center and Broad streets in Dunkirk, police said.
Kelsey Smith, 215 E. Ohio St., was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital by Jay Emergency Medical Service for injuries to her leg and head, Dunkirk police reported.
Smith rode her bicycle from Broad Street onto Center Street, where it was struck by a car driven by John D. Anderson, 86, 375 E. Center St., Dunkirk, police said.
Witnesses told police that a pick-up truck, owned by the city of Dunkirk, was stopped for a stop sign at Broad Street waiting for an eastbound car to pass through the intersection at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday.
Smith pedaled her bicycle around the pick-up truck and entered the intersection, where the eastbound car driven by Anderson struck her bicycle.
Police said Smith was knocked about 10 feet off the bicycle.
Damage to both the bicycle and Anderson’s 2003 Hyundai Elantra was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
TEEN INJURED
Jay County police investigated a one-vehicle accident Wednesday that resulted in injuries to a Portland teen. The accident occurred at U.S. 27 near county road 650 South in Pike Township at 4:37 p.m. Wednesday.
Injured in the accident was Ashley Marie Miller, 17, 1271 West 650 South, Portland. She was transported by Jay Emergency Medical Services after complaining of pain to her head and neck. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
She was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by Matthew Allen Darby, 16, 504 N. Park St., Portland.
Darby told police he was eastbound on county road 650 South approaching U.S. 27. Darby told police he crested a hill and didn’t realize there was a stop sign. He said he applied the brakes of his pickup truck, losing control and sliding across U.S. 27.
The pickup truck slid off the southeast side of the intersection and tipped onto the driver’s side.
Estimated damage to the 1969 Chevrolet C-10, registered to Brett Darby, same address as driver, were between $1,000 and $2,500. The truck was towed from the scene.
HOUSE FIRE
A Portland home received moderate damage to the kitchen and attic area from an electrical fire Wednesday evening.
The Portland Fire department was called to the home of Jerry Bell Jr., 615 N. Alexander St., at 7:43 p.m. for a fire in the attic. Two trucks and 13 firefighters responded to the call and were back at the station by 9:39 p.m.
MERCER ACCIDENT
A Portland woman was involved in an accident at a bank in Fort Recovery Friday at 1:45 p.m.
Esther N. Davis, 72, was attempting to park her car at the Community First Bank and Trust, 220 N. Wayne St., Fort Recovery, when she apparently placed her foot on the gas instead of the brake. Her car went over a 6-inch concrete curb, drove through an aluminum barrier and struck the bank building.
Davis was checked for injuries by an emergency medical technician, but refused further treatment.
Moderate damage was done to her car, which was towed from the scene. The building was also damaged.
AREA COURTS
A Fort Recovery man was sentenced in Celina Municipal Court recently after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated and blood alcohol content.
Bernard L. Lea, 62, 129 N. Wayne St., was sentenced to 12 days in jail to run concurrently with a sentence received from Mercer County Common Pleas Court and also had his driver’s license suspended for six months.
In another case, Lea pleaded no contest to a domestic violence charge and was sentenced to nine days in jail to run concurrently with his other sentences.
In the same court, Mitchell S. Stammen, 20, 2105 Sharpsburg Road, Fort Recovery, pleaded guilty to underage possession/consumption of alcohol and was fined $100 and court costs.
Also fined was William R. Hemmelgarn, 61, Portland, for a traffic signal violation. He was fined $23.50.
Fined in Winchester City Court were: Darrell A. Male, Portland, seat belt violation, $25; and Gregory A. Current, Redkey, driving with suspended driver’s license and speeding, $189.50.
Tracey Paxson, rural Bryant, was fined $95 in Bluffton City Court for speeding.[[In-content Ad]]
