Tiebreaker givs Jay OAC title (01/26/2009)

ANDERSON - The Patriots, Spartans and host Scots all finished Saturday with two wins and a loss. But only one could walk away as the champion.

Jay County High School wrestling team earned that honor Saturday, taking the Olympic Athletic Conference title by going 2-1 and winning the tiebreaker.

JCHS defeated Muncie Southside 52-25 and Connersville 39-24 while losing 33-30 to Anderson Highland. Connersville, which placed second, defeated Highland 37-34 and Southside 51-21, and Highland defeated Southside 47-25.

Caleb Culy (130), Ben Theurer (140) Sha White (189) and Kyler Blowers (HWT) all went 3-0 to lead the Patriots to the OAC crown, the third for JCHS this winter along with girls basketball and girls swimming. Casey Kenney (119), Cameron Pfeifer (135), Skylar Finnerty (152), Michael Daniels (160) and Matt James (215) all went 2-1.

Jay gymnasts split

MARION - Now the Jay County gymnastics team knows the challenge it faces.

The Patriots won the sectional title by a slim margin last season, holding off Huntington North and Marion. Saturday, the host Giants showed they are ready to challenge again as they scored 101.625 points to JCHS's 93.8. Blackford was last at the three-team meet with 69.7.

Kristen Ainsworth turned in the top finish for Jay County (7-3) as she took second place on the floor exercise with an 8.55. She was also fourth on the vault at 8.2.

Nadlie Runyon was third on both the balance beam and uneven bars with scores of 8.35 and 7.8.

Marion's Emily Guarneri won every event - her high score was a 9.325 on the beam - for an all-around total of 35.775.

EJ 8th wins tourney

The Chiefs' eighth grade girls basketball team defeated Monroe Central 45-24 and Winchester Driver 41-33 Saturday to win as hosts of the East Jay Middle School Girls Basketball Invitational. The seventh graders lost 20-18 to Monroe Central, but bounced back to beat Driver 23-18.

Hannah Ainsworth led the EJMS eighth grade team (10-0) in both games, scoring 17 in the championship and 13 in the opening round. Emily Devoe had 10 points against Drive, and Gabi Cross and Mikayla Jobe each scored 10 against Monroe Central.

Alex Loy and Tasya Smith each had four points for the seventh grade Chiefs (7-2) in their win over Driver. Abby Dunlavy tallied eight points against Monroe Central.

Chiefs top Bellmont

DECATUR - East Jay Middle School's sixth grade basketball teams visiting Bellmont Saturday with the girls rolling to a 35-4 win while the boys triumphed 40-29.

McKensie Muhlenkamp had six points and three assists to lead the girls team (3-0). Angelica McKibben also scored six points.

Justin Dirksen had eight points for the boys, who picked up their first victory. Cole Guntle added seven points.

Bellis leads grapplers

Cody Bellis won the 160-pound match in just 27 seconds Thursday to lead the East Jay Middle School wrestling team to a 57-36 win over Delta.

Willie Skiver (125), Zach Metcalf (135), Kyler Garringer (175) and Lucas Boyer (HWT) all added pins in less than a minute.

Corey Bellis (105), Brandon Poore (115), Steven Strohl (120) and Pierce Clott (145) also recorded pins, and Conner Ray (80) won by a 3-0 decision.

Junior varsity wins came from Hunter Gillette (115), Ceaser Castor (135), Preston Keen (135), Eric Hemmelgarn (175), Logan Antrim (HWT) and Nick Spahr (HWT).
