Tigers take 1st in WJCC soccer (07/10/06)

DUNKIRK — The Tigers capped their championship season it the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League Saturday with a 9-2 victory over the Jaguars.

Zaaron Lee led the Tigers, who finished 4-1-1, with six goals. Hunter Miller added three scores.

Jesse Gallardo and Michael Himes each had single tallies for the Jaguars.

In the other game Saturday, the Jaguars (2-4-1) eked out a 5-4 victory over the Cheetahs (2-3-2).

Himes brought home the win for the Jaguars as he scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter. Gallardo had the other two tallies, and Connor Davis scored all four goals for the Cheetahs.

Davis led the league in scoring for the season with 29 goals, with Lee and Miller tied for second at 19 apiece.

Rockets go 3-1

The Portland Rockets picked up three victories in four outings this weekend, sweeping a double-header from the Midwest Prospects and splitting a pair of games with the Grand Lake Mariners.

Portland (18-7, 13-2 Midwest Prospects League) won an exciting opener when Derek Lehrman hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to bring home Phil Bruns with the winning run. Jay County graduate Mitch Waters tossed two innings of relief for the win.

Todd Graves smacked a home run and finished with three hits and five RBIs as the Rockets dominated game two 14-5. Michael Jobe, a JCHS junior, started, and Bruns got the win in relief.

Grand Lake topped Portland 4-3 in their first meeting Sunday, but the Rocket offense roared back to take game two 14-11. Bruns led the way with four runs, and Waters scored three times. Waters, Bruns, Lehrman and Matt Gard all had two hits.[[In-content Ad]]
