Yorktown scored as many runs in the first inning as the Patriots did all day.
The Jay County High School softball team gave up back-to-back-to-back home runs in the opening frame Saturday as it fell 15-4 in six innings and 12-0 in five innings to the visiting Yorktown Tigers.
Rachelle Jackson took the loss in the opener, allowing 10 runs — eight earned — on 12 hits and two walks in three innings. Nikka Chaney allowed 12 runs — seven earned — on 14 hits and two walks in the game-two defeat.
Chelsea Tighe was the only JCHS player to record hits in both games, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI in the first and adding a single in the second. Catherine Dunn had two hits, a run and an RBI in the opener.
The Patriots (12-11) have lost five straight.

Keller leads golfers
NEW CASTLE — Jay County posted a score of 368 in competition Saturday at the New Castle Invitational.
Justen Keller turned in the top score for the Patriots, who had three players shoot in the 80s at an 18-hole event for the first time this season. He led the way with an 84.
Evan Mathias was one stroke back with an 85, and Richie Carducci added an 86.
Adam Alfont rounded out the team score with a 93, and Dylan Friddle shot 105.


JV baseball loses
OSSIAN — The Patriots fell 11-1 to the host Norwell Knights in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday and gave up a four-run lead in game two in a 5-4, eight-inning defeat.
Andrew McShane tossed the first three innings in the game-one defeat. Chaz Carroll took the loss in relief in the second game.
Zach Pryor went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in game two, in which the Patriots took a 4-0 lead before giving up two runs in the fifth and one each in the sixth, seventh and eighth.
Lucas Hendee, Carroll and McShane each had two hits in the second game. Pryor and Chandler Woodward picked up one hit apiece in game one.

Shreve wins one
HUNTINGTON — Zane Shreve picked up the lone victory for the Jay County boys track team at Saturday’s Huntington North Freshman/Sophomore Invitational.
The Patriots scored 59 points to finish last in the six-team event. The host Vikings posted 193 to win by 32 points over Warsaw.
Shreve’s victory came in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.2 seconds. He was also the runner-up in the high jump as he cleared the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches.
Andrew Eley finished second with a toss of 133 feet, 7 inches, in the discus.[[In-content Ad]]
