Tinkham leads EJMS 8th

Middle school roundup

HUNTINGTON - Ryan Tinkham carried the East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team to a 28-20 victory Saturday over host Riverside.

Tinkham ran for 141 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Chiefs improved to 2-1. Preston Keen tossed for 59 yards, including a 21-yard TD pass to Jason Houston, and Zach Metcalf added 37 yards rushing and a TD.

Jacob Easton led the defense with seven tackles and an interception.

EJ seventh wins two

SELMA - The East Jay seventh grade volleyball team split its four matches Saturday at the Selma Invitational.

The Chiefs defeated Frankton 25-8, 25-9 and Southwood 25-23, 25-13 and lost to New Castle and Union County. The EJMS eighth graders picked up their lone win against Frankton, and the sixth grade team defeated Anderson Eastside.

Malarie Houck led the seventh grade Chiefs to their fifth-place finish with 30 points and 18 assists. Jessica Kerrigan had 33 points, Breanne McIntire totaled 15 kills and Catherine Dunn came up with seven digs.

Rachel Ferguson led the eighth grade team with 33 points and six digs. Katlin Petro added 21 points, 13 kills and three blocks.

Abby Reier's 20 points and 12 aces were team highs for the EJMS sixth graders. Mallory Marshall had 15 points.

Chief girls win invite

SELMA - East Jay took five of the top 11 spots Friday to win the Selma Cross Country Invitational.

The EJMS girls scored 37 points to easily win the 10-team event in front of runner-up Monroe Central (69). The Chief eighth grade boys were third out of five teams with 56, and in the 12-team seventh grade boys race EJMS was fourth with 108 while West Jay placed ninth with 236.

Abigail Johnson led the EJMS girls in 12:47 for third place, and Megan Wellman was fourth in 12:51. The other three Chiefs finished ninth, 10th and 11th with Emi Minnich at 13:12, Alex Loy at 13:16 and Amber Huelskamp at 13:21.

Jalen Ryder of EJMS had the top individual finish, winning the sixth and seventh grade boys race by less than a second over Shenandoah's Eric Demick in 11:45. Zane Shreve was the runner-up in the eighth grade boys race for the Chiefs in 11:07.

Top runners for West Jay were Kyler Carvel (third - 11:54) in the sixth and seventh grade boys race, Kyle Selvey (sixth - 11:48) in the eighth grade boys race and Desiree Parfitt (41st - 15:10) in the girls race.[[In-content Ad]]
