Eighth grader Jarrett Tomey wants to be number one in his favorite subject.

With a geography bee win at East Jay Middle School under his belt, he is thrilled to be competing at the state level in the National Geographic Bee on Friday.

More than 100 fifth, sixth, seventh and eight graders from all over Indiana will vie Friday for an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2005 National Geographic Bee. The first place winner from each state contest will compete in the national competition on Wednesday, May 25 hosted by “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek.

The top three winners of the national bee will win scholarships totaling $25,000 for first place, $15,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place.

Tomey will travel to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis on Friday to compete in the bee. He will be accompanied to the contest by his EJMS history teacher Dawn Klatt, his parents Susan and Richard Tomey and his brother Nathan Tomey, a Jay County High School senior.

To make it to the state geographic bee, Tomey first had to score the highest in his social studies class on a written geography test. This title allowed him to compete in the school’s oral geography bee, which he won in January. This win enabled him to take another written test, which was submitted to the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. It was good enough to qualify him to compete at the state level.

“We are real proud of him,” National Geographic Bee coordinator and EJMS seventh grade geography teacher Mike Smith said Monday. “The (contest) is so wide based it is not something you can cram for ... It’s pretty in depth.”

EJMS has not had a student compete in the bee at the state level in about three years, said Smith, who has been the school’s contest coordinator for more than 10 years.

Tomey said Monday that he enjoys learning about different countries and where they are located. He likes traveling and has been to Guam and California to visit family.

He is excited to take German next year as a freshman at JCHS and puts Germany on the top of his list as places he would like to visit.[[In-content Ad]]
