Top-ranked Rockets stop skid at Geneva (07/07/05)

GENEVA — Looking for their third straight win, the Geneva Cardinals stayed close for six innings Wednesday night. But, their neighbors to the south would not allow them to get a win streak going.

The No. 1 Portland Rockets scored four times in the seventh inning as they put an end to their three-game losing streak with a 9-1 victory over Geneva.

Portland, the top-ranked team by Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball, ended its longest skid of the season as it got to Cardinal reliever Sean Cook in the seventh. Kyle Dygert, who finished with two hits, got the key knock in the inning with a two-run single to right field.

The Rockets (22-11) scored three more runs in the ninth for the final margin. Pete Milas paced the offense, going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Phil Bruns and Adam Childs joined Dygert with two hits apiece.

The big seventh came after Geneva pulled to within 2-1 with a run off of South Adams graduate Matt Ousley in the bottom of the sixth inning. Robert Carroll delivered the Cardinals’ lone RBI, bringing Chris Anderson to the plate.

But, that was all Ousley would allow as he picked up the victory while striking out six batters in four innings of relief. He followed fellow former Starfire Scott Stauffer, who made his first appearance in seven years and struck out four batters in three shutout innings.

Dan Fensler suffered the defeat for the Cardinals despite allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out three and did not allow a walk.

Portland did most of its damage against Cook, scoring seven times against him in the final three frames.[[In-content Ad]]
