Top students named at West Jay (02/06/07)

Students of the month for January were recently named at West Jay Middle School.

In sixth grade was Shane Mercer, son of Jeff and Donna Mercer.

In seventh grade was Morton Garringer, son of Wade and Susan Garringer.

In eighth grade was Brock Barcus, son of Kevin and Wanda Barcus.

Named to deans' lists

Jill Elizabeth Roughia has been named to the dean's list at Huntington University for the fall term 2006.

Roughia is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in history-social studies education.

A graduate of Jay County High School, she is the daughter of John David Roughia, Bryant.

Several area students were recently named to the 2006 fall semester dean's list at Ball State.

From Geneva are Kyle Armstrong, Margaret Beymer, Ashley Bollenbacher, and Casey Gentis.

Students from Bryant were Adam Homan, Andrew Pinkerton and Brittany Pinkerton; from Dunkirk, Brent Caldwell, Tammy Cook, Derek Gee, Robert Green, Ryan Hornbaker, Byron O'Conner, Ryan Shrack, Thomas Shrack, Lisa VanSkyock, Lonnie Ward, and Ryan Wenger; from Redkey was Michael Hurt.

Students from Portland included Abigail Arnold, Kelli Budde, Jarred Corwin, Nicholas Ehrhart, Tyler Johnston, Brandon May, Stephanie Phillips, Adrienne Rines, Jesse Shawver, Darrell Upp, and Erich Zielinski.

Amanda Kirby, Ridgeville, was also named to the list.

Anna Culy has been named to the dean's list at Taylor University in Upland for the fall semester of 2006.

She is a Jay County High School graduate and a senior at Taylor majoring in history.

The University of Indianapolis has announced its dean's list and honor roll for the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year.

Dean's list students have completed at last 12 hours during a regular semester and earned a grade point average of 3.7. Honor roll students have completed 12 credit hours and earned a grade point average of at least 3.4 but less than 3.7.

Scholarships announced

Indiana Trust and Investment Management Company has announced the members of the judging committee for the inaugural Indiana Trust and Investment Management Company Scholarships to Ivy Tech Community College and to Anderson University.

One $1,000 scholarship to Ivy Tech and one $1,500 scholarship to Anderson University will be awarded to an East Central Indiana high school senior in Blackford, Delaware, Grant Henry, Jay, Madison, Randolph or Wayne counties, planning to attend Ivy Tech Community College in Muncie, Anderson, Marion or Richmond, or Anderson University.

The deadline for applications is March 23.

Candidates must be Indiana residents who are currently enrolled in the senior class of an East Central Indiana high school.

To conduct classes

The Whitewater Valley Railroad at Connersville will conduct operating classes for brakeman, conductor, fireman, engineer, agent, and operator to be held each Saturday at 9 a.m. beginning Feb. 10 and continuing through March 31.

The railroad is a non-profit organization operated entirely by volunteers who are qualified only for the Whitewater Valley Railroad by attending the training school.

These classes are open to the general public. A $15 donation is requested to help cover the cost of class materials.

Nominations sought

Each Wal-Mart and Sam's Club location across the U.S. will name a winning local Teacher of the Year in honor of National Teachers' Day, Tuesday, May 8.

Nomination forms for the company's annual award are available through Feb. 23 at any Wal-Mart store.

Outstanding educators are eligible for a $1,000 grant in addition to other prizes.

"Everyone has someone who inspired them to be successful - whether you're still a student or not," said Jim Fennig, manager of the Portland Wal-Mart store.

All winners are invited to apply for state honors by completing and submitting a comprehensive application form by June 1.

One national winner will receive $25,000 when the National Teacher of the Year award is announced in November.[[In-content Ad]]
