Tribe earns sectional bye

Fort Recovery roundup

FORT RECOVERY - The Arcanum Trojans made Saturday difficult for the Indians. But they were still rewarded with a bye Sunday.

A day after dropping a double-header 5-1 and 13-0 in five innings to Arcanum, the Fort Recovery High School softball team picked up the No. 2 seed in the Division III softball sectional tournament hosted by Elida.

The Tribe (10-9) and top-seeded Parkway will each get first-round byes and advance to sectional championship games May 11 and 12 respectively.

Fort Recovery will play the winner of Saturday's sectional semifinal game between Liberty-Benton and Coldwater (7-12) while Parkway will get either Paulding or Lima Central Catholic.

The two sectional champions will advance to the district tournament hosted by Bath. Fort Recovery defeated Coldwater 6-0 in their meeting April 20.

In their games Saturday, the Indians struggled to get much offense going against Arcanum. They manged just a single run on six hits, including two from Janelle Schwieterman, in the opener, and got just a Stacy Gehle single in the second.

Marissa Brunswick doubled and scored the Tribe's only run of the day, and Josie Guggenbiller had a single and an RBI.

Andi Sutter took the game-one loss, allowing five runs - three earned - on 11 hits and two walks. Shelby Brunswick gave up 13 runs - six earned - on nine hits and four walks in the second game.

Baseball falls in five

ST. HENRY, Ohio - The Division III No. 5 St. Henry Redskins were too strong for the Indians Friday night, handing them a 12-0 defeat in five innings. Also Sunday, the Indians drew an opening-round game against Parkway in the sectional tournament.

Nathan Keller took the loss for Fort Recovery (1-12), allowing 11 runs - nine earned - on eight hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings. St. Henry took control with a seven-run third inning and held the Indians without a hit for the second straight game.

The Tribe also suffered a no-hitter Thursday against Celina, and managed just a single hit in their loss Tuesday to New Knoxville.

Fort Recovery will play Parkway, a team it lost to 15-5 in five innings April 13, in the opening round of the Division IV sectional tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. The other opening-round game will pit Marion Local against New Bremen at 1:30 p.m.

The winners will advance to take on New Knoxville and Minster respectively on Wednesday, May 12.
