Tribe gets No. 2 seed for sectional (04/27/05)

FRHS baseball

The Fort Recovery baseball team will have an extra week to prepare for the 2005 sectional tournament thanks to earning a first-round bye.

The Indians (9-8) were selected as the second seed at the Minster sectional, which begins Saturday. The host Wildcats (7-5) got the No. 1 seed.

In first round action Saturday, Marion Local (7-7) will open sectional play at noon against New Knoxville (3-11). New Bremen (8-6) and Waynesfield-Goshen (1-11) will follow at 2:30 p.m.

Fort Recovery will begin its tournament season Saturday, May 7 when it plays the New Bremen/Waynesfield-Goshen winner at 2:30 p.m. That will be the second of two semifinals as Minster will meet the New Knoxville/Marion Local winner at noon.

The championship game will be Monday, May 16 at 5 p.m.

IHSAA considering changes

The IHSAA Board of Directors will consider several changes at its annual meeting Monday in Indianapolis.

According to a press release issued by the IHSAA Tuesday, the 17-member board will consider:

• limiting open gym programs for each sport to the preceding season and summer.

• adding a second moratorium week.

• moving back the first day of practice for winter and spring sports from Monday to Saturday.

• adding a third day of no live contact to the pre-season football practice schedule.

• limiting the number of volleyball matches on school nights to two per week.

Also, the executive committee will review the status of gymnastics as an IHSAA-sponsored sport as well as take action on proposals from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association and the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

Fort pair breaks records

While the Tribe teams finished in the middle of the pack at last week’s Tiger Relays at Ansonia High School, a pair of Fort Recovery track athletes broke school records in the process.

Sophomore Holly Stein took down the 14-year-old discuss record with a toss of 103 feet, one inch. The previous record of 101 feet, three inches was set by Barb Hull in 1991.

Freshman Matt Vagedes snapped the pole vault record as he cleared the bar at 11 feet, one inches. Gary Diller set the previous record in 1986 at 11 feet even.

Prescott dominating

It’s still early in the spring meet at Indiana Downs near Shelbyville, but a jockey with Jay County roots is running away from the rest of the field.

Rodney Prescott, who has been a professional jockey for about 10 years, is dominating in earnings, wins and top-three finishes in the current Indiana Downs meet, which began April 15.

Through Saturday, Prescott had taken 60 mounts with earnings more than doubling that of the No. 2 jockey. Horses ridden by Prescott had earned $122,319. The jockey’s share of the earnings averages about 7 percent of the total.

In the 60 races, Prescott has won 16, finished second in 11 and third in four, giving him a top-three percentage of .517 (31-of-60).

The spring meet at Indiana Downs continues through June 18, with live racing Tuesday through Saturday. Post-time for the first race is at 2:55 p.m. on Tuesday, and at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
