The Indians turned in their best season since joining the Midwest Athletic Conference, and the second-best in their history. But it left them short of a playoff berth.
Fort Recovery High School's football team, which closed its regular season Friday with a 34-6 loss to St. Henry, finished 16th in the Division IV, Region 24 computer points. The top eight teams in each region advanced to the tournament.
The Tribe, which went 5-5 and 4-5 in the MAC, had a computer average of 6.25, finishing one position behind Riverside (6.8) and one ahead of Mississinawa Valley (3.0). The eighth and final team to make the playoffs was Notre Dame (Portsmouth), which edged Cincinnati Country Day with an average of 9.962.
Fort Recovery's overall record topped full-MAC season marks of 4-6 in 2000 and 1997, and was one short of the school best 6-4 in 1994 - the year before the school joined the MAC for football. The Indians had never won more than two games within the MAC, and had gone winless in the league six times in 12 seasons.
Only two MAC teams made the playoffs this year, as Marion Local (10-0) finished second in Division V's Region 20 and Coldwater (9-1) was fifth in Division IV's Region 16. Parkway (8-2) and Anna (7-3) narrowly missed the playoffs in Division V, Region 20, finishing ninth and 10th respectively.
Hibbard, Runyon qualify
Gym City Gymnastics added two more athletes to its list of state qualifiers as it competed recently at Lafayette Gymnastics Club.
Miranda Hibbard and Nadlie Runyon each posted all-around scores above 32 to earn state berths and joined five other teammates in taking the top all-around spot in their division.
Hibbard and Runyon won two events apiece on the way to top all-around scores of 32.1 and 33.325 respectively.
Lizzy Schoenlein, Katie Witt, Riley Leavall and Courtney Miles each scored sweeps, winning every event on the way to their all-around titles. Emily Riggs also won two events and finished first in the all-around.[[In-content Ad]]
