After a big weekend, Fort Recovery kept rolling Tuesday.

The Indians, who jumped back into the Ohio Division IV poll this week at No. 18, dominated the book-end games, defeating the host Jay County Patriots 25-8, 25-18, 25-10 in interstate volleyball action.

“I thought the kids took care of business,” said FRHS coach Jackie Briscoe. “We had some slip-ups, we knew it, but we bounced back from our mistakes and ended up taking the win.

“It was nice to get to see everybody get to play and contribute ...”

The Tribe was coming off victories Saturday against Indiana’s Class 3A No. 6 Fort Wayne Concordia and Ohio’s Division IV No. 10 Crestview. It will play another state-ranked team Thursday when it visits the Division IV No. 7 Marion Local Flyers Thursday.

“We improved in some areas,” said Jay County coach Larry Hinshaw, whose team dropped to 5-21. “... But we’ve still got some things to work on. Basically it’s consistency with the little things.

“(One of the things) we’ve been trying to work on is bouncing back from mistakes instead of letting it affect us for four or five plays. I thought we did a better job of that.”

Fort Recovery (12-6) rolled out to a 9-2 lead in the opening game, then sent Tiff Gaerke back to serve. Gaerke went with the jump serve and notched three straight aces, two of which went untouched by the Patriots.

Kelly Link added a kill for a 13-3 lead, and the Indians later scored the final six straight points to win the game.

Jay County put together a much better effort in the second game, scoring the first point on a Markie Runyon kill. It had leads of 6-4 and 7-5, but fell behind as Fort Recovery scored the next six points in a row.

The Patriots managed to get back within one point twice, and trailed just 17-15. However, the Indians pushed the lead back out with three straight points, capped by another Gaerke ace, and finished the game on a Lauren Wenning kill.

“We did have some strategies, we just had a hard time pulling them off,” Hinshaw said. “I thought we stepped up and slowed down their hitters. That helped our defense. We just didn’t pick up some balls off blocks or tips that we should have picked up.”

Fort Recovery played the third game much like the first, grabbing a 5-0 lead thanks to three Gaerke kills and two Kelly Link aces. It added an 8-0 run later in the game, again on Link’s serve, and capped the match on another kill by Wenning.

Gaerke powered the Indians with her 18 kills. She scored five of her eight points on aces, and also had six digs and one block.

Link posted a team-high 11 points, including three aces. She added seven digs and four kills.

Kristen Schwieterman and Holly Stein each scored nine points. Jennalee Post had 19 assists, and Abby Niekamp finished with 11 assists.

Lauren Wenning totaled seven kills and two blocks, and libero Vicki Roessner had eight digs.

“I think Thursday night my kids need to show up,” said Briscoe, looking ahead to the Midwest Athletic Conference showdown with the Flyers. “If they show up and they play hard I think we’ll give them a real run for their money.

“I think keys for us will be serving and passing. If we can keep them out of system more than us, we’ll win the games. And I’m confident that my kids can do that.”

Markie Runyon paced the Patriots against Fort Recovery with seven kills and one block. Sarah Mescher and Shelby Rines each had two kills.

Erica Clark finished with eight assists and a block. Theresa Reinhart had five digs, and Rines and Kelly Sautbine each added three digs.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery also dominated the first game of the junior varsity match and held off the Patriots in the second for a 25-8, 25-17 win.

LeAnne Tobin racked up a team-high 10 points, including three aces, to lead the Indians (12-2). She also had six digs, three kills and one block.

Sarah Braun totaled six kills, including one to end the match. Kinsey Wenning had seven points and four kills, Heather Schmackers put up 15 assists and Joanna Snyder had nine digs.

Sharon Dirksen finished with five assists and an ace for Jay County. Stephanie Wellman followed with four assists, Julie Alig had five kills and Sarah Westgerdes added three kills.

Amber Cotherman paced the team with three digs.[[In-content Ad]]
