Tribe splits with Knights

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians were on the verge of being swept. Instead, they finished their busy first week with a walk-off victory.
Fort Recovery High School’s baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the visiting Crestview Knights 4-3 Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader. The Tribe dropped the first game 8-5.
The Indians (6-2) allowed three unearned runs in the third inning of game two and trailed 3-2 heading into the seventh. But they pulled even, and then pinch runner Derek Backs scored the game-winning run on a single by Cole Wendel, who finished 2-for-3.
Chad Schroer tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Crestview took control with a four-run third inning in the opener as it totaled 14 hits. Blake Boughman and Jacob Muhlenkamp each went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for FRHS.
Patriots pull even
GAS CITY — Jay County evened its record at 1-1 Saturday as it built an eight-run lead on the way to a 10-6 victory over the host Mississinewa Indians.
Jason Houston powered the Patriot offense as he drove in three runs and scored twice while finishing 2-for-4 with a double. Kyle Selvey was 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, Alex Dunn had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Landry Inman singled and scored three times.
Inman also picked up the victory in relief as he allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six in four innings. Houston allowed two runs on two hits in three innings of work.
JCHS also won the junior varsity game 14-3 with Mitchell Kunkler going 3-for-5 with a run. Kunkler also struck out four batters in four innings for the win.
SAHS drops two
MONROE — South Adams struggled to slow down the opposing bats Saturday as it fell 15-3 to the host Adams Central Flying Jets and 9-2 to the Bellmont Braves.
The Starfires never led, giving up three runs in the first inning to Adams Central and two in the first to Bellmont.
Blake Fox took the loss against the Flying Jets as he gave up 9 runs — eight earned — on 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Alex Augsberger allowed seven runs — five earned — on four hits and three walks in five innings to suffer the defeat in game two.
The Starfires (1-3) managed nine hits on the day, including solo home runs by Collin Affolder and Corey Seffernick. Dakota Scherrer, Affolder and Seffernick had two hits apiece, and Blake Fox scored a run in each game.[[In-content Ad]]
