Tribe wins in MAC

FORT RECOVERY — After a drought that lasted nearly four years, the Indians finally got themselves back in the MAC win column.
Fort Recovery High School’s baseball team took the lead with three runs in the third inning Tuesday and then held off the New Knoxville Rangers 5-4.
The win marked the first Midwest Athletic Conference victory for FRHS since defeating the St. John’s Blue Jays 2-1 on May 19, 2008. They had dropped 27 straight league games, including three one-run losses this season.
Senior Jared Kahlig pitched the Indians (7-12, 1-4 MAC) to the win, giving up four runs — two earned — on eight hits and five walks. He struck out two batters as he went the distance.
Hayden Pottkotter, also a senior, had a single, two runs and an RBI, and Kahlig added a hit and two RBIs.

Nevil leads SA
BERNE — Brianna Nevil came up big for the South Adams softball team Tuesday as it knocked off the visiting Heritage Patriots 7-3.
Nevil’s two-out triple in the third inning gave the Starfires (6-8) a lead they would never relinquish. She also had a double as she finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs.
Alexis Ford had a single, two RBIs and two runs, and Lyndsey Chandler and Alaina Johnston each scored twice. Loren Sparks and Lily Taing drove in two runs apiece.
Alyssa Bluhm struck out eight batters in seven innings for the win. She limited Heritage to three runs on four hits and two walks.

Star netters fall
BLUFFTON — The South Adams girls tennis team is still looking for its first win after falling 5-0 Tuesday to the Bluffton Tigers.

The closest match of the evening for the Starfires (0-9) came at No. 2 singles. Holly Taylor fought to a tiebreaker in the second set before falling 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to Amanda Stone.
At No. 1 singles Maddie Graber lost 6-1, 6-0 to Megan Evans, and in the No. 3 singles match Madison Kloepper fell 6-1, 6-3 to Allison Williams.
Shiana Scott and Erika Miller suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Hannah Gilliam and Gina Eisenhut at No. 1 doubles.
Faith VonGunten and Megan Hreha lost 6-0, 6-2 to Hunter Cunningham and Sierra Steffen at No. 2 doubles.
SAHS dropped the junior varsity match 7-2.

SA baseball loses
BERNE — After tallying three runs in the first inning Tuesday, the South Adams baseball team went scoreless over the next six in a 6-3 loss to the visiting Heritage Patriots.
Nick Batt took the loss for the Starfires, giving up three runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Heritage tied the game with two runs against starter Dustin Wanner in the fifth inning and then scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh for the final margin.
Wanner led South Adams at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Blake Fox added two hits and a run, and Collin Affolder also had two hits.

Tigers top Fort JV
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery junior varsity softball team struggled Tuesday in a 22-7, five-inning loss to the Versailles Tigers.
Ashley Homan took the loss as she gave up 19 runs — seven earned — on 11 hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Taylor Guggenbiller went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run for the Tribe (0-2). Haley Knapke had two hits and a run, and Melissa Lochtefeld finished with a single, a run and an RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
