WINCHESTER - On the road, in front of a packed house, in a difficult place to win, Jay County's experience shined through.
Four-year starter Corey Comer and three-year starters Scott "Scooter" Bruggeman and Clint Muhlenkamp scored 44 of their teams 51 points Friday night, including all but two in the second half. They also combined for more than half of the Patriot rebounds and assists as they carried the team to a 51-47 victory over the host Winchester Golden Falcons.
"Corey and Scott had good offensive games and really good defensive games," said JCHS coach Craig Teagle of the seniors who finished with 19 and 17 points respectively. "And Clint just had another outstanding defensive game. He's just an unbelievable defensive player, and he scores eight points too."
Bruggeman and Muhlenkamp finished off the victory for the Patriots (9-3) in the closing moments, although Winchester had its share of chance.
Trailing 48-47, the Golden Falcons got the ball to sophomore Tyler Koch, who worked for an open shot in the lane. But he came up well short, and Bruggeman was fouled after the rebound. He hit both free throws to push the Jay County advantage to three points.
Winchester (10-4) again went to Koch, whose 3-pointer bounded off the back of the rim. But, the home team got another chance when it came up with a steal after Patriot sophomore Billy Wellman grabbed the rebound.
However, after a time-out, junior guard Brock Ward was pressured on the right side and stepped out of bounds to hand the ball back to Jay County. Bruggeman was fouled with 10 seconds left and hit the first free throw for the 51-47 lead, and Muhlenkamp rebounded his miss on the second to finish off the game.
"Both teams, in my opinion, are playing at a level that championship teams play at," said Winchester coach Chip Mehaffey. "Our youth showed up where we did not execute in the fourth quarter like we needed to.
"Jay County's kids did a great job. Bruggeman was outstanding. As a third-year starting guard, he did exactly what you would expect a kid to do in that situation. He took over and played outstanding.
"Hopefully our kids will aspire to become those kinds of players in crunch time and we'll win those close games in time."
The Patriots' big three were 15-of-21 for 71 percent from the field while the rest of the team was just 2-of-11 (18 percent).
Comer scored the first seven points of the game as Jay County pushed to a 9-0 lead, but he picked up his second foul less than five minutes into the game and spent the remainder of the opening half on the bench. When he was able to stay on the floor in the second half he continued his outstanding effort, finishing 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-7 from the line for his game-high scoring total.
Muhlenkamp was perfect on the night, going 3-for-3 from the field and 2-of-2 at the line, and Bruggeman made 6-of-11 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws. Bruggeman dished out a game-high four assists, and Muhlenkamp had a team-high five rebounds.
It was another great defensive effort for Muhlenkamp, who hounded Winchester's leading scorer, Koch (14 points), to the tune of just 3-of-13 shooting.
Teagle said he was proud of his team for gutting out a win on the road despite battling illnesses all week. It was the first home loss of the season for Winchester, which had not lost in the Fieldhouse since Jan. 28 of last season.
"If you come to Winchester and win, it's a huge win," said Teagle, whose team last won on the road against the Golden Falcons in 1999. "I don't know how many they've lost (at home) since coach Mehaffey's been here, but it's got to be just barely in double figures.
"To come here and fight and battle through the last possession and find a way to win says a lot about this group of kids."
Winchester has lost just 14 home games in the last decade.
After Jay County rolled to its big early lead, the Golden Falcons used a 15-5 second-quarter run to reclaim the advantage at 21-20. Bruggeman and Muhlenkamp then pushed the Patriots to their 23-21 halftime margin.
The lead changed 12 times in the second half, with Winchester pushing ahead by as many as four early in the fourth quarter. But the home team managed just four points over the final 6:15 as five of their six missed free throws came in the final period.
Ward joined Koch in double figures for the Golden Falcons with 10 points, and Andy Stover had a game-high six boards.

Jay County trailed by four in the fourth quarter, but rallied for a 35-30 victory over the Golden Falcons.
The Patriots were up by one at halftime, but fell behind 23-20 at the end of three quarters. But after their deficit grew to a game-high four points they proceeded to a 15-7 advantage over Winchester in the final period to claim the win.
Dexter Shreve led Jay County to the victory with 10 points. Adam Garringer was right behind him with nine points, and Kyle Simmons chipped in seven.
Levi Cross scored 11 points to pace the Golden Falcons. Austin Davis added nine points.[[In-content Ad]]
