Trojans down Jay Co. (01/20/05)

JCHS girls basketball

NEW CASTLE — The hole was so deep, Jay County couldn’t climb all the way out.

The Patriot girls basketball team struggled early, came almost all the way back and then fell to the New Castle Trojans 60-47 Wednesday.

Jay County (11-5) got off to a very slow start, scoring just five points in the first quarter. It trailed by as many as 18 in the second quarter before going on a late run to pull to within 29-18 at the half.

Markie Runyon scored seven of her eight points in the third quarter as the Patriots pulled to within one point. And, the game was within striking distance in the closing minutes before New Castle got a couple of easy buckets to put it away.

The Trojans (7-7), who had lost seven of their last nine games after opening 4-0, won on the power of Jessica Carr’s 23 points. She scored at least four points in every quarter, including eight in the decisive fourth.

Amanda Lee added 12 points, Kami Clemons had nine and Ashley Flynn scored eight.

Jamie Bruggeman and Sara Garringer shared scoring honors for Jay County with 10 points apiece. Runyon notched seven rebounds, Weitzel had five boards and Garringer dished out five assists.

The Patriots, who play at Indianapolis Howe Saturday, turned the ball over 21 times compared to just 10 for New Castle.

The Patriots trailed by one after a quarter and were up by two at halftime before taking control in the third period. They outscored New Castle 8-0 in that quarter as they pulled away for the win.

Natasha Stout paced Jay County as she scored all of her nine points on 3-pointers. Whitney Homan added five points, and Abby Loy and Brittany O’Dell each scored four.
