NEW CASTLE - Nadlie Runyon nearly led the Patriots to an upset of the sixth-ranked team in the state.

Runyon won the all-around competition Saturday in a three-team meet at New Castle as the Jay County High School gymnastics team fell just short against the No. 6 host Trojans 99.6-99.175. Blackford was a distant third with 64.

The Patriots won two events, with Runyon picking up the floor exercise victory with a 9.1. Katie Snyder, who finished second in the all-around, scored a career-best 9.45 to take first place on the vault.

Runyon was also second on the balance beam (8.125) and third on the vault (8.75) and uneven bars (8.175). Snyder tied Runyon for third on the bars and was also third with a 7.75 on the balance beam.

Kristen Ainsworth was fourth on the vault (8.7) and beam (7.3).

SW tops Starfire boys

BERNE - South Adams' boys basketball team struggled in the second half Friday in a 55-40 loss to the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.

The Starfires trailed by just three at halftime before Southern Wells took control with a 12-3 run in the third quarter for an 11-point lead. SAHS (1-11, 0-5 Allen County Athletic Conference), which has lost 10 straight, never pulled closer than six points the rest of the way.

Chase Harris dominated South Adams inside, totaling 28 points and 19 rebounds for the Raiders (5-8, 2-4 ACAC). Luke Roush and Clayton Hamilton each added seven points.

Nick Teeter finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Starfires, who shot just 6-of-26 (23 percent) in the second half. Trevor White added four points and seven boards.

In junior varsity action, Scott Hoeppner scored 19 points to lead SAHS to a 48-43 victory.

Jets defeat SA girls

BERNE - The South Adams girls basketball team finished the Allen County Athletic Conference winless as it fell 38-32 Saturday to the visiting Adams Central Jets.

Karen Bollenbacher scored 11 points to lead the Starfires, who were up 22-15 at the half but managed just three fourth-quarter points in the defeat. It was the seventh straight loss for SAHS (2-15, 0-7 ACAC), which also got seven points from Lyndsey Chandler.

Michelle Ripley totaled 10 points for Adams Central (9-8, 3-4 ACAC).

South Adams also dropped the junior varsity game, 36-18, getting five points apiece from Whitney Matney and Kristen Musselman.

Tribe falls to Minster

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery freshman girls basketball team suffered a 31-24 loss Saturday to the Minster Wildcats.

Kelsey Fiely scored eight points for the Indians, who are now 5-3. Melissa Lochtefeld added six points.[[In-content Ad]]
