Trojans stifle Jay

Jay County girls basketball

NEW CASTLE — The Patriots’ chance for a fourth victory over a North Central Conference school looked promising after the first quarter. But their offensive struggles bit them over the next 16 minutes.
After limiting the New Castle Trojans to a single point in the opening eight minutes, the Jay County High School girls basketball team was outscored 30-7 over the next two quarters in a 41-26 defeat.
JCHS (8-5) locked down the Trojans, who were averaging 54 points per game, in the first quarter, taking a 9-1 lead. However, Courtney Baker scored 11 points in the second quarter as New Castle claimed a 21-14 advantage at the half.
The home team, which has now won seven in a row, held the Patriots without a field goal in the third quarter as it pushed the lead to 31-16.
Baker finished with a game-high 16 points for the Trojans, whose last loss was Dec. 4 by a 67-63 score to Richmond in double overtime. Shelby Davis scored all of her seven points in New Castle’s big second quarter, and Emily Smith added six points.
Jay County has struggled on offense recently, as it has been held to fewer than 30 points in each of its last three games. It has not scored more than 35 since a 53-28 win Dec. 9 over Frankton.

Maria Murphy and Mariah Hornaday each scored six points to lead the Patriots against New Castle. Cara Garringer added five points.
In junior varsity action Tuesday, JCHS defeated New Castle 19-18. Katie Aker led the Patriots (11-2) with 10 points, and Katlin Petro added four.

Chiefs top NC
East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade girls basketball team came up big in the final period Tuesday to earn a 21-16 victory over host New Castle. The seventh graders lost 39-10.
The EJMS eighth grade team (7-1) trailed by two heading into the third quarter, but then held the Trojans to a single point in the fourth as it rallied for the win. Malarie Houck led the effort with 12 points, and Breanne McIntire added four.
Gabby Hart finished with four points for the Chief seventh graders (6-2), who were held scoreless in the first and third quarters.[[In-content Ad]]
