Complains of pain
A rural Portland woman and her passenger complained of pain following a 7:50 a.m. accident in the city on Monday.
Jewel A. Hardymon, 46, 3565 North 150 East, complained of neck pain following the accident on Water Street in Portland. Her passenger, Lindsey Hardymon, same address, also complained of neck pain.
Hardymon told Portland police that she was stopped in traffic, west of Wayne Street, and waiting to turn left into a drive at East Jay Middle School. Her 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer was struck in the rear by a 1989 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Steven A. Kelly, 17, 1216 West 450 South, Portland. Kelly said he was talking to a passenger and could not stop in time to avoid the collision.
Combined damage to the Chevy truck, registered to Fred A. Kelly, same address as driver, and the TrailBlazer, was estimated at less than $1,000.
Driver cited
A Fort Recovery man was cited by police following a two-vehicle accident in Portland on Monday.
Robert L. Freemyer, 77, 117 E. Butler St., was cited by Portland police for failure to yield the right of way following the 3:16 p.m. accident.
Freemyer told police he was headed south on Wayne Street and began to stop at Water Street.
At the same time, Amy L. Eley, 226 East 650 South, was driving east on Water Street. She began to turn north onto Wayne Street and the vehicles collided.
Combined damage to Freemyer's 2003 Buick LeSabre and Eley's 1999 Oldsmobile Eighty-eight was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.
Barn destroyed
A rural Portland man's Greene Township barn was destroyed by fire on Monday.
Portland firefighters were called to 5229 West 200 South, Portland, at 5:49 p.m.
When the first firefighters arrived at the scene at 5:56 p.m., the barn was fully engulfed in flames, a firefighter said. Twelve firefighters responded with two trucks.
The owner of the barn, Steve Godfrey, 4276 West Ind. 67, Portland, was burning a brush pile near the barn. An ember blew against the barn and ignited a fire, a firefighter said.
The fire was controlled at 6:14 p.m., and out at 7:20 p.m.
Pennville and Redkey firefighters assisted at the scene.
Wallet, meds taken
A Portland resident told police that someone stole his wallet and two bottles of prescription medication from his vehicle.
Christopher Aker, 1335 Meadow Lane, said the theft occurred between 8 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. Monday. Aker told Portland police the vehicle was unlocked.
Change stolen, again
For the third time in a month, someone has stolen money from a video game at a local laundry.
The theft occurred between 10 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday at Wash House Laundry, 120 E. Votaw St., Portland.
Someone also broke into a video game and stole an unknown amount of change between April 5 and 6 and between March 22 and 23.
Bicycle stolen
A Portland resident reported the theft of his bicycle on Monday.
Willie Beeson, 920 W. Water St., told Portland police his Huffy Cortez 10-speed bike was stolen while it was parked at the Portland Pool.
Beeson said the theft occurred sometime Sunday night. He reported the theft Monday at 9:28 p.m.
Pills taken
Medications belonging to a Noble Township man recently were stolen from his pick-up truck while it was parked in Portland.
John Sparrow, 8612 East 200 South, said the theft occurred about two weeks ago while his vehicle was parked in front of the City Cigar Store, located along Commerce Street.
Prescription pain medication was stolen. He reported the theft Monday.
Deer hit
A vehicle driven by a Salamonia man struck a deer in Madison Township Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
Charles E. Wendel, 33, 3987 S. Jackson St., told Jay County police that he was driving south on county road 300 East, south of county road 300 South. A deer ran on the road and he could not avoid hitting it with his 2003 Pontiac Sunfire. The impact caused the car to go off the west side of the road and into a field.
Damage to the car was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.
Fort Recovery accident
Two Fort Recovery residents were involved in a two-vehicle accident in the village recently.
A 2006 Pontiac driven by Mitchell D. Link, 18, 1484 Burrville Road, and a 1989 Buick LeSabre driven by Carolyn S. Parsons, 55, 508 Greenville Road, collided April 1 at 6:50 a.m.
Link told Mercer County police that he was driving on Industrial Drive and stopped at the intersection with Ohio 49. He failed to see Parsons driving south on Ohio 49, and pulled into the intersection. The vehicles collided and went off the road southwest of the intersection. Both vehicles came to rest in the yard of Jutte Electric.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
Collision on Ind. 218
A farm truck driven by Randall R. Reynolds, 53, rural Geneva, collided with an SUV driven by Michael T. Smith, 33, Montpelier, about 3:55 p.m. on Feb. 7 on Ind. 218 near Adams County road 650 West.
Reynolds was attempting to turn left when the Smith vehicle attempted to pass. Damage to the two vehicles was listed at between $5,000 and $10,000.
Stolen from home
A rural Bryant man told police that someone stole several items from his home.
Menno Schwartz, 2087 West 400 North, told Jay County police the theft occurred between 1 and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Checks on a closed bank account and identification cards were stolen.
Stereo stolen
A Portland resident told police that someone stole a stereo from his truck.
Gordon Jaquay, 422 W. Water St., said the theft occurred between 3 p.m. Sunday and 5:45 a.m. Monday. The stereo was stolen from his 1993 GMC pick-up truck.
Value was estimated at $400, Portland police said.
Tires cut
Two tires on a Portland resident's vehicle were cut recently.
Jeremiah Imel, 936 W. High St., told Portland police that the rear tires on his car were cut between sometime on Friday and before 7:11 a.m. Saturday. Imel also said a brick recently was thrown through the rear window of the car.
Imel said he might know who committed the vandalisms.
Sunglasses stolen
An employee of a Portland business reported the theft of sunglasses on Saturday.
The employee of Low Bob's Discount Tobacco, 601 N. Meridian St., called police Saturday at 2:56 p.m.
The sunglasses were stolen by a male wearing a light blue jacket and a blue and white baseball cap, the employee said. He and another person left in a blue Chevrolet S-10 pick-up truck.
Value of the sunglasses was $11.99.
Pole fire
Portland firefighters were called to a utility pole fire Sunday morning.
The pole was located behind 1123 S. Bridge St. The top of the pole was broken and the pole was on fire, a firefighter said.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 6:10 a.m. The one firefighter who responded to the scene arrived at 6:14 a.m.
The firefighter left the scene at 7:33 a.m. The pole is owned by Indiana Michigan Power.
In area courts
Joel E. Sheets, 25, Fort Recovery, pleaded no contest in Celina Municipal Court to a charge of possession of marijuana. He was fined $100, was assessed court costs, and had his driver's license suspended for six months.
In the same court, Roy W. Adams, 48, Portland, pleaded no contest to passing a stopped school bus. He was fined $40 and assessed court costs. Corey Lee Sudhoff, 18, Fort Recovery, was fined $35 for speeding.[[In-content Ad]]
