Leaf collection

The city of Portland will resume leaf collection on Wednesday.

Leaves will be picked up at residences in the city until May 2. Anyone who wishes to have their leaves collected should pile the material next to the street.

Habitat meeting

Habitat for Humanity board of directors will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 323 S. Meridian St., Portland.

An update on the 440 E. Seventh St. build will be discussed.

Hits sign

The trailer of a semi truck driven by a Kentucky man went into a ditch and struck a stop sign in Bearcreek Township Monday night,

Jasper E. Jennings Jr., 44, 2728 Michelle Park, Lexington, told Jay County police that he was attempting to turn around at U.S. 27 and county road 800 North. As he turned left onto county road 800 North, the left rear trailer tires went off the north side of the road and into a ditch. The trailer then struck the stop sign. The vehicle then became stuck.

The 10:55 p.m. accident caused combined damage to the stop sign, owned by the Indiana Department of Transportation, Indianapolis, and the semi trailer, registered to Shady Creek Trucking, 2080 Cincinnati Pike, Georgetown, Ky., estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

Company vehicle hit

An employee of a Decatur business told police that one of the company's vehicles was hit while parked in Portland recently.

The employee of Habegger Flooring Distributors Inc., 1337 Village Green Drive, said the accident occurred April 9 while the 2004 Chevrolet van was parked at FCC (Indiana) Inc., 555 Industrial Park Drive. The passenger side of the vehicle was hit.

The employee said company officials decided to report the accident after determining that the damage would be about $2,300. He reported it on Monday.

Foot slips

A Portland woman told police that her foot may have slipped off the brake, causing her car to collide with a vehicle driven by a Greensburg man on Monday.

Sherri A. McKibben, 45, 801 E. Walnut St., told Portland police that she was driving south on Meridian Street in Portland, and stopped at the stoplight at McNeal Street. McKibben said she was tired and her foot may have slipped off the brake, causing her 2001 Saturn to strike the rear of a 2004 Toyota Four Runner stopped in front of her.

Nathan D. Jackman, 33, 1378 N. E. Santee Drive, was driving the Toyota involved in the 3:02 p.m. accident.

Combined damage to the Saturn, also registered to Lew F. McKibben, same address, and Jackman's vehicle was estimated at less than $1,000.

Ohio accident

A Redkey woman was involved in a two-vehicle accident in Ohio recently.

A 2004 GMC pick-up truck driven by Dawn M. May, 21, Redkey, and a 1990 Dodge truck driven by Jeremy L. Smith, 22, 710 Devonshire Drive, Apt. 15, Celina, Ohio, collided near St. Henry, Ohio. The accident occurred April 16 at 6:45 a.m.

Smith told Mercer County police he was driving west on Cooper Farms Drive and failed to stop at a stop sign at Cooper Drive. He began to turn left and his vehicle collided with May's vehicle.

Smith was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

The vehicles received damage estimated at minor to moderate.

Blow the grass

All Portland residents are asked to not blow their grass clippings into the street. The grass can clog the city's catch basins during rainstorms.

Jeff Harker, street and park department superintendent, requests that all grass clippings remain in the yards in the city.

No-spray list

Anyone who lives in Portland and would like their properties not to be sprayed with mosquito spray this summer should contact the street and park department at (260) 726-4077.

The city is switching to a different kind of mosquito spray this year, which may irritate the lungs of those with asthma.

Spraying will begin in late May or early June and will be done on Thursdays from dusk until about 12 or 1 a.m.

Anyone with water standing for more than two weeks this summer is asked to change the water to prevent the birth of mosquitoes. Also, the city can apply larvicide to the water.

Paddleboat stolen

A rural Portland man recently reported the theft of a paddleboat from his property.

Carl Imel, 2225 South Como Road, told Jay County police that his 1974 yellow boat was stolen between sometime on April 10 and 12:36 p.m. Monday.

Imel said the boat is about 8 feet long and 5 feet wide, and would take about four people to carry it. Value was estimated about $1,600.

Windshield broken

A Portland man told police that the windshield of his son's vehicle was broken recently.

Edward Hicks, 823 W. Race St., said someone apparently threw his 50-pound bag of mulch through the windshield of the 1987 BMW. The bag of mulch was then stolen, he told Portland police.

Hicks said the incident occurred between 9 p.m. Sunday and 3:30 p.m. Monday while the vehicle was parked at his residence.

Restroom vandalized

Someone tore the sink off a bathroom wall at a Portland park.

The incident occurred at Milton Miller Park, located at the corner of Lafayette Street and Franklin Avenue. The vandalism caused the sink to spray water. The damage was reported to Portland police Monday at 3:52 p.m. The city's street and water departments were contacted by police.

In area courts

Also, in Adams Circuit Court recently, HSBC Mortgage Services was granted $124,108.89, court costs and a mortgage foreclosure from Joshua E. and Christina M. Phenis, Ridgeville.

In Wells Superior Court recently, Bluffton Plumbing, Heating and Electric was granted $564.74 from Shane Brown, Geneva.[[In-content Ad]]
