New badge
The Jay County Sheriff’s Department has hired Matt Tarter, previously an officer with the Dunkirk Police Department, as the department’s new deputy.
Tarter, who was sworn in Monday, has been an officer with the Dunkirk department since June 2002.
Tarter will be replacing Jerry Bell who retired on Aug. 12, Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod said Monday afternoon.
Arrested
A Portland man was arrested on Monday by Jay County police for class C felony battery.
A warrant was issued on Aug. 15 for the arrest of Jack D. Grady, 31, 134 E. High St. He is accused of hitting a Portland man in the ribs with a baseball bat during a July 19 altercation, according to a prosecutor’s office official.
As of this morning, Grady was being held on $40,000 bond at the Jay County Jail. His bond was increased because he was a habitual offender.
It’s open
The Museum of the Soldier will be open this week to accommodate visitors to the annual Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Show at the Jay County Fairgrounds.
The museum, located at 510 E. Arch St., Portland, will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Special exhibits include a 9/11 remembrance, Operation Iraqi Freedom, a World War II M18 tank destroyer, and a Korean War 50th anniversary exhibit.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students and seniors.
Showtime
The CR’s annual special section focusing on the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Show is included in today’s edition, with a complete schedule, scenes from last year’s show, interviews with early arrivals, and a visit with a family who celebrates a wedding anniversary each year at the show.

Thursday’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs should be in the upper 80s.
