Public meeting

Jay County Soil & Water Conservation District will have a public meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. at the USDA Service Center, 1331 W. Ind. 67, Portland.

Sticker stolen

A Portland woman told police that someone stole the date sticker off of her license plate sometime before Monday evening.

Debra Butler, 125 N. Hayes St., told Portland police that she discovered someone had taken the sticker off of her license plate after she was pulled over by an Indiana State Police trooper. The theft occurred sometime before Monday.

Change stolen

A jar of change was stolen out of the home of a Portland woman sometime between Thursday and Monday.

Kathy Watson, 999 Boundary Pike, Apt. 17, told Portland police someone entered her apartment and took a jar full of change. The theft occurred sometime before Monday afternoon.

Identity stolen

A rural Portland woman told Jay County police that her ex-boyfriend has allegedly been using her identity.

Lyndi Evans, 3544 East Ind. 26, reported that her ex-boyfriend had allegedly used credit cards and attempted to apply for a Bank of America credit card in her name.

She reported the incident Monday afternoon.

Rear-ended

A rural Pennville man rear-ended a vehicle in southern Portland Monday morning.

Steven L. Drinkut, 60, 7636 West 550 North, was driving south on Meridian Street in Portland when he looked off to the side. When he looked in front of him again, he saw a car driven by Vickee C. Schoenherr, 49, 8060 East 500 South, Portland, was stopped to make a left turn on Seventh Street. Drinkut was unable to stop in time and rear-ended Schoenherr's vehicle.

An estimated $1,000 to $2,500 of damage was caused to Drinkut's 2000 Dodge Stratus and Schoenherr's 2000 Jeep Cherokee. The accident occurred at 9:44 a.m.

Backing accident

A Portland man's car was hit while he backing out of a parking spot in town Monday afternoon.

Derek A. Wilson, 516 N. Middle St., was backing out of a parking spot on Wilson street near the intersection of North Street, when he was struck in the rear by Oscar G. Alvarado, 36, LaGrange, Texas.

An estimated $750 to $1,000 of damage was caused to Alvarado's 1993 Ford Crown Victoria, registered to Amber S. Nava, 446 E. Seventh St., Portland, and to Wilson's 2008 Honda Civic. The accident occurred at 4:03 p.m.

Injured

An Ohio woman suffered injuries after swerving off the road and striking a tree in Jefferson Township Monday morning.

Amanda R. Litmer, 20, 115 Lorber St., Convoy, Ohio, was driving north on New Mount Pleasant Road north of county road 500 South when she swerved off the left side of the road and clipped a tree with the rear fender. The vehicle spun and came to rest in the ditch.

Litmer told police she did not remember what happened. She was treated at the scene by Jay County emergency medical services and transported to the hospital for minor bleeding and head injury.

An estimated $1,000 to $2,500 of damage was caused to her 1997 Nissan 200SX, which was towed from the scene following the 9:22 a.m. accident.

Adams accident

A car driven by Shilo S. Shepherd, 19, Geneva, sustained $1,000 to $2,500 in damage when it struck a guardrail at Adams County road 150 West and road 500 South about 9:40 p.m. Friday. Shepherd told police his brakes failed at the T-intersection.

Area courts

Sheree R. Hoover, Ridgeville, was fined $25 for a seat belt violation in Winchester City Court.

In Adams Superior Court recently, Wesley L. Hough, 33, rural Bryant, was sentenced on a charge of driving a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of .15 or more.

He was sentenced to one year in the Adams County Jail, with 185 days suspended. He was placed on probation for one year and was ordered to complete alcohol abuse counseling. His driver's license was suspended for 90 days, and he was ordered to pay $364.50 in court costs.[[In-content Ad]]
