Schooling

A rural Portland Baptist church has announced plans to open a Christian elementary school next fall.

The school will be located in the new Doan Ministry Center at the church, which is located at 289 South 200 West, near Jay County High School.

The school will offer kindergarten for ages 4-5, along with grades one through six.

The Rev. Hugh Kelly, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church, said this morning that enrollment will likely be limited to about 200.

“We want to start enrolling immediately,” Kelly said.

An open house will be held Monday, March 1 regarding the planned school. Members of the public will be able to tour the facilities and ask questions.

For details on the fee schedule or for more information, call the church at (260) 726-8895. The church office is located in a former home at 286 South 200 West, across from the church.

Jay County’s coroner has officially dropped out of the race for re-election.

Brad Myers, a Republican who announced Monday that he was resigning because of a planned move to northern Indiana, filed paperwork this morning in the Jay County clerk’s office to remove his name from the ballot for the May primary.

Also this morning, a Portland man has filed to become a candidate to be a delegate to the Indiana Democratic Convention.

Filing was Randy Geesaman, 219 Floral Ave.

The filing period for major party candidates for county, state and national offices closes at noon on Friday.

William O. Ashley, 36, 623 S. Lincoln St., Three Rivers, Mich., was arrested for sexual misconduct with a minor, a class B felony, after a warrant was issued in Van Buren Circuit Court in Paw Paw, Mich.

Michigan State Police will come to the Jay County Jail later this week to pick up Ashley, who is being held without bond, and transport him to Van Buren County in Michigan.

Officials from the Jay County Jail said this morning that Michigan police alerted local ISP that Ashley, who drives a semi-truck, was set to make a delivery at Tyson Foods-Mexican Original on Monday. Police arrested him when he arrived at the Portland business.
