Scheduled

Interviews with four finalists for the position of Jay County Highway Department superintendent have been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12.

Jay County Commissioners will interview the candidates in executive session from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The commissioners will conduct drainage board business beginning at 9:30 a.m.

There were a total of 15 applicants for the highway superintendent position, which became available when Robert Sours announced his resignation last month to become Portland’s police chief.

Also Monday afternoon, the commissioners signed encumbrances (money brought forward to pay bills from 2003) totaling $1.818 million, and also made Jay County engineer/interim highway superintendent Dan Watson purchasing agent to buy a new air compressor for the highway department.

Open house

The Jay County 4-H Council is hosting an open house Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bryant Area Community Center in Bryant for any Jay County student interested in joining 4-H and their parents.

Another open house will be held Monday, Jan. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Jay Community Center, which is located in Dunkirk City Park.

Dedication

A dedication ceremony for the Pyle Building in Geneva will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m.

The newly renovated town building is located at 411 E. Line St.

Following the dedication, State Sen. David Ford, R-Hartford City (District 19), and State Rep. Mike Ripley, R-Monroe (District 79) will be available in the building for questions.

Arrested

A rural Portland man was arrested early Saturday by Jay County police for felony driving while intoxicated and driving after his license was suspended.

Thomas L. Coby, 26, 601 East 650 South, was arrested for driving while intoxicated and driving after his driver’s license was suspended for 10 years, both class D felonies, after he was pulled over by police.

He was released from the Jay County Jail later Saturday on $4,500 bond.

Monday’s high was 31, the low was 5 and the temperature at 7 a.m. today was 5, the Portland weather observation station reported.

There also was just a trace of new snow this morning.
