Board to meet
The Portland Board of Works will meet Friday at 10 a.m.
The meeting will be held in the mayor's office at Portland City Hall, 321 N. Meridian St. The board normally meets on the first Thursday of the month.
Laptop stolen
A Parker City woman told Portland police her laptop and her Palm Pilot were stolen from her workplace in Portland.
Alicia Brown, 305 N. Main St., said the items were stolen from Manpower Inc., 609 N. Meridian St., Portland. The items were taken between 3 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Monday.
Brown said the Lenovo laptop was valued at $950 and the Palm Pilot was valued at $300.
Bike taken
A Portland resident reported the theft of a bicycle recently.
Eric Wall, 936 W. Main St., said the 26-inch Next bike was stolen while it was parked behind Pit's Cocktail Lounge, 214 N. Meridian St., Portland.
Wall told Portland police the theft occurred between 10 a.m. and noon on Sunday. The bike belongs to Brian Shaneyfelt.
Left scene
A driver left the scene after sideswiping a minivan at Wal-Mart Monday morning.
A vehicle scraped the side of a 1998 Plymouth Voyager minivan registered to Michael and Vicky Boolman, 306 E. Main St., Bryant. The driver left the scene after the accident. The minivan was parked at the time.
Damage in the accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500. The sideswipe occurred at 10:15 a.m.
Intersection crash
Two vehicles collided in a south Portland intersection Monday evening.
At the intersection of Seventh Street and Blaine Pike, August J. Jutte, 74, 415 E. Main St., St. Henry, Ohio, did not see Amanda R. Morrison, 20, 122 Honeysuckle Lane, Portland, turning into the intersection and struck her.
Combined damage to Jutte's 2006 Chevrolet Express van, registered to Tru Edge Grinding, same address, and Morrison's 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, registered to Julia Smith, same address, was between $2,500 and $5,000. The accident occurred at 4:50 p.m.
Missed road
A Pennville man missed a turn and struck a parked truck in a private drive early Monday morning.
Eric W. Morgan, 32, 290 N. Meridian, was driving south on county road 1150 West at 4:20 a.m. He missed the curve when the road turns into 300 North and entered a driveway, striking a parked truck belonging to Jon P. Hollopeter, 11687 W. 300 North, Dunkirk.
Between $2,500 and $5,000 of damage was caused to Morgan's 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier and Hollopeter's 1997 Ford Ranger pickup.
Morgan's car needed to be towed from the scene.
Backed into traffic
A rural Portland man was struck while backing out of his driveway into traffic Sunday night.
David A. Grayson, 3866 W. 200 North, pulled out of his driveway without seeing Karla D. Murach, 118 W. Kentucky St., Pennville, who hit the back of his van. Murach was unable to avoid the collision.
Murach's 2003 Chevrolet Venture van needed to be towed away from the accident. Combined damage to Murach's van and Grayson's 1991 GM Safari was estimated at $2,500 to $5,000. The accident occurred at 10:08 p.m.
Special meeting
The Ridgeville Town Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday to discuss the use of golf carts.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Ridgeville Library/Fire Station.
Teen referred
A Portland teenager has been referred to the Jay County Probation Department in connection with five lawn ornament thefts in the city.
The 17-year-old female was referred to probation last week, Portland police said Monday. She is accused of stealing items from yards at Golden Age Village, located on Sesame Street in Portland. She also is accused of stealing bird, butterfly and dragonfly statues from the yard of Mark Iliff, 617 E. Race St.
The stolen items have been recovered.
The thefts occurred during the first week of July. Police received 23 reports of lawn ornament thefts. The remaining cases are still being investigated.
Theft, a class D felony when committed by an adult, is considered an act of delinquency when committed by a juvenile.
Hit by deer
A rural Dunkirk woman's vehicle received damage estimated at $1,000 to $2,500 when it was struck by a deer twice Saturday in Richland Township.
Natasha R. Byers, 18, 295 South 1100 West, told Jay County police that the accident occurred at 10:20 p.m.
Byers said she was driving east on Division Road, west of Ind. 1. A deer ran onto the road and hit the front driver's side of the 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix. The deer then spun around and hit the driver's side door and rear quarter panel, causing heavy damage.
Mailbox vandalisms
Portland and Jay County police received several reports of mailbox vandalisms during the weekend.
Kip VanSkyock, 1009 Blaine Pike, called Portland police Sunday at 9:23 a.m. and said his mailbox was damaged.
VanSkyock said the incident occurred between 9 p.m. Saturday and 9:20 a.m. Sunday. He had just put up a new mailbox because he had another one damaged last week, he told police. Value was estimated at $7 to $12.
Also Sunday, Philip Frantz, 4637 West 200 South, Portland, called Jay County police and said his metal mailbox was destroyed. He contacted police at 9:36 a.m.
Bettina Geesaman, 1696 South Blaine Pike, Portland, also called Jay County police Sunday.
Geesaman said that her mailbox, along with mailboxes belonging to two of her neighbors, were damaged. She reported the vandalisms at 12:23 p.m.
A Portland police officer called Portland police Sunday at 7:14 a.m. and reported damage to several mailboxes.
The officer said mailboxes at 304, 325, 327, 905, 957, 1007, 1008, 1303 and 1313 Blaine Pike, along with 300, 303 and 416 W. Water St., Portland, were damaged.
Burglary attempts
Portland police received two reports recently of attempted burglaries.
The first was reported Friday at 8:24 p.m.
An employee of Mars Pet Care, 214 E. Lincoln St., said someone attempted to pry open a door on the southwest side of the business.
The incident occurred sometime in the last week, the employee said.
Also, Jessica Franks, 948 S. Shank St., called police Sunday and said someone attempted to break into her shed.
A lock on the door was pried, police said.
She reported the incident to police at 3:19 p.m.
In area courts
In Adams Superior Court recently, Schwartz Marathon, Berne, was granted $748.68 from Roger Journay, rural Portland; Bluffton Plumbing, Heating and Electric was granted $298.41 from Jane Buckingham, Geneva; and American General Financial Services Inc. was granted $1,525.61 from Ron E.
