Blood drive
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross will participate in this year’s statewide Fallen Officer Blood Drive Campaign.
The blood drive will be held June 6 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Bryant Wesleyan Church, 209 S. Hendricks St.
The annual drive is held in honor of Sgt. Daniel Starnes, who was killed in the line of duty in 2001.
Vehicle damaged
Someone scratched a Salamonia resident’s vehicle while it was parked at the Freeman Scouting Facility, 4681 West 450 South, Portland.
Sarina Wendel, 3987 S. Jackson St., told Jay County police that the entire driver’s side of her Dodge Journey was scratched. She said the vandalism occurred Saturday afternoon while the vehicle was parked near the soccer fields.
Outlet overheats
A pop machine overheated an outlet at a Portland business on Saturday.
Portland firefighters were called to Vernon Schmidt Garage, 525 N. Meridian St. at 8:50 p.m. The first firefighter arrived at the scene at 8:52 p.m. Eight firefighters responded with one truck.
Firefighters left the scene at 9:16 p.m.
The business is owned by Ralph Grapner.
Most efficient
Fort Recovery Schools has been recognized as one of the most efficient Ohio schools in providing non-instructional services.
Fort Recovery was chosen for this distinction by Ohio Education Matters, a non-partisan state public policy research organization. The honor is based upon data for the 2009-2010 school year.
In transportation, Fort Recovery Schools spent $20,986 on gasoline, maintenance and operation per bus. Other similar districts spent as much at $59,568.62 per bus.
Stolen from home
Someone entered a local resident’s home on Monday and stole jewelry and change.
The burglary occurred at the home of Kevin Craig, 3984 West 350 South, Portland. The burglary was discovered Monday at 2:20 p.m.
Jay County police said a list of all of the stolen items is still being compiled.
Juvenile referred
A Portland boy has been referred to the Jay County Probation Department for allegedly stealing items from a convenience store.
The 12-year-old male is accused of stealing a pop and candy with a total value of $7.56 from Circle K, 325 N. Meridian St., Portland. The theft occurred Monday, Portland police said.
Theft, a felony charge when committed by an adult, is considered an act of delinquency when committed by a juvenile.
Falls asleep
A Redkey man told police he fell asleep while driving in Adams County, causing his vehicle to enter the median and hit a speed limit sign.
Doniell N. Hiser, 31, told Adams County police he was driving south on U.S. 27, near Ind. 124, and fell asleep. The vehicle drifted to the median.
The accident occurred Wednesday at 8:35 p.m. Combined damage to the vehicle and the sign was estimated at $2,500 to $5,000.
Foot slips
A Bluffton woman told police her foot slipped off the brake, causing her vehicle to hit a car driven by a Geneva woman.
Karen S. Bauman, 69, Bluffton, told police she was stopped at Main Street and Ind. 124 in Bluffton, behind Lisa A. Moore, 44. Bauman said she was adjusting the air conditioning in her 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis, and her foot slipped off the brake. The Mercury hit the rear of Moore’s 2010 Ford Focus.
The accident occurred Friday at 4:13 p.m. and caused combined damage estimated at less than $1,000.

A vehicle driven by a Geneva woman struck a deer in Wells County Saturday.
Jeannell Masters, 46, told police she was driving on Ind. 116, near county road 600 East, and hit a deer with her 2006 Chevrolet HHR. The 6:20 a.m. accident caused damage estimated at more than $2,500.[[In-content Ad]]
