Warehouse fire

An electrical problem in a light fixture sparked a fire at a Wayne Township warehouse on Monday.

Portland firefighters were called to Red Gold, 957 South 200 West, Portland, at 4:20 p.m.

The first firefighters arrived at the scene at 4:24 p.m. Sixteen firefighters responded with three trucks. It took firefighters several minutes to find the fire, which was located near the east side of the building. Wooden pallets filled with cardboard were burning, a firefighter said.

Pennville firefighters brought their trucks to the Portland Fire Station to standby while the fire was being extinguished.

The fire was out at 7:21 p.m. Firefighters left the scene at 7:30 p.m.

The building suffered damage estimated at moderate to heavy. It is owned by Brian Reichart, Orestes.

Meeting canceled

The May meeting of the Pennville American Legion Auxiliary has been canceled. The June meeting will include installation of new officers.

Backing accident

Vehicles driven by a Florida man and a Woodburn woman collided near the gas pumps at a local convenience store on Sunday.

A 2004 Winnebago driven by Thomas J. Altman, 66, 2133 Calusa Lakes Blvd., Nokomis, and a 1995 Ford Taurus driven by Karen J. Criswell, 19119 Woodburn Road, collided at 5:55 p.m.

Altman told Portland police he was turning into the parking lot of Village Pantry, 704 N. Meridian St. near Criswell. When she began to back up, her car struck the recreational vehicle.

Combined damage to the RV, also registered to Sherry Altman, and the car was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

Bumper damaged

Vehicles driven by a two rural Portland residents were damaged while parked at Marsh Hometown Market, 218 W. Lincoln Ave., Portland, on Thursday.

The front of a 1997 Pontiac driven by Ida J. Cassel, 82, 1067 West 200 North, and the rear of a 2003 Chevrolet driven by Donna K. Sanders, 450 West 100 North, were damaged.

Cassel told Portland police that when she parked her vehicle in a parking space, there was no vehicle parked in front of her. Sanders said she found the front of Cassel's vehicle touching hers when she came out of the grocery store.

Police were notified of the accident at 12:27 p.m.

Combined damage to the Pontiac and the Chevy, also registered to Shawn D. Sanders, same address as driver, was estimated at less than $1,000.

Semi vs. deer

A semi truck driven by a Kentucky man struck a deer in Penn Township Monday at 11:55 p.m.

Robert T. Vance, 37, 9041 Cedar Flat Curtis Road, Edmonton, told Jay County police he was driving west on Ind. 18, east of county road 750 West. A deer ran onto the road and he could not avoid hitting it with the 1996 Freightliner Columbia.

Damage to the semi, registered to Al Smith Trucking, 8984 Murphy Road, Versailles, Ohio, was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

Juvenile referred

A Portland teenager has been referred to the Jay County Probation Department for allegedly stealing two packs of gum.

The 15-year-old male allegedly shoplifted at Circle K, 729 S. Meridian St. The theft occurred Monday at 3:15 p.m., Portland police said.

Each pack of gum is valued at $1.69.

Theft, a class D felony charge when committed by an adult, is considered an act of delinquency when committed by a juvenile.

Troopers honored

Two Indiana State Police troopers who work for the Redkey District recently were honored for their efforts.

Trooper Shaun Armes received the Trooper of the District award, and Trooper Nick Campbell was given the Life Award.

Armes was assigned to the Redkey District in 2004. He has served as road trooper, district field training officer, and has completed Top Gun Narcotics Investigative Training.

He, his wife Kelly, and their two children live in Adams County. He currently is assigned to the Fort Wayne district.

Campbell earned his award for having the highest annual total of impaired driving arrests.

He is a Ball State University graduate and resides in Delaware County. He is soon to be wed to Kristin Monaghan.[[In-content Ad]]
