Clarification
Shane A. Midlam was booked into the Jay County Jail to serve time on a prior class D felony for driving while intoxicated. He was not arrested on a new charge.
Guns stolen
Portland police are investigating the theft of two handguns from homes in the 800 block of East Water Street.
Charles Whittington, 824 E. Water St., told police Saturday evening that a Hi-Point .380 handgun had been stolen from his home sometime between Thursday and Friday. The gun, valued at $140, is black with a silver stripe on its side.
Shane Babbitt, 825 E. Water St., reported Monday afternoon the theft of a Smith and Wesson .22 semi-automatic with two magazines. The gun, valued at $300, is blue and was in a blue gun case.
Strikes tree
A Portland woman complained of pain after her 2006 Chevrolet Uplander van struck a tree Monday morning.
Sheron S. McClung, 66, 964 S. Meridian St., was traveling south on wet pavement on Blaine Pike near county road 200 South when her vehicle went off the west side of the road while she was taking a curve.
The van left the roadway and struck a tree on property owned by Ramon Loucks, 1766 S. Blaine Pike.
Damage was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000. McClung was treated in the emergency rooms of Jay County Hospital.
Gasoline stolen
Robert Meinerding, 2060 S. Mt. Pleasant Road, Portland, told county police Sunday morning that about 16 gallons of gasoline had been stolen from his pick-up truck.
Deer struck
Two more deer were struck in separate accidents Monday night.
About 9:10 p.m. a 1998 Chevrolet driven by Tony L. Morgan, 48, 3379 S. 1000 West, Dunkirk, was southbound on county road 1000 West near county road 400 South when his vehicle struck a deer that ran into the roadway.
About 9:35 p.m. Melvin M. Hilty Jr., 38, 103 Williamson Drive, Portland, was eastbound on county road 200 South near U.S. 27 in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am when a deer ran into the roadway and struck his car.
Dunkirk mishap
Jay County police investigated an accident at Pleasant and Main streets in Dunkirk Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
Myrtle L. Morgan, 79, 1248 S. Main St., Dunkirk, told police she was eastbound on Pleasant and stopped at the Main Street intersection. She pulled out to make a right turn but failed to see a southbound 1998 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Alyssa L. Shrack, 21, 603 S. Franklin St., Dunkirk.
Morgan’s 2002 Buick LeSabre collided with the right side of the Shrack car. Total damage to the two cars was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Pleads guilty
Amanda Bessesen, 21, rural Portland, pleaded guilty last week in Adams Superior Court to charges of theft and possession of a narcotic.
She received an 18-month jail sentence with all but 334 days suspended and was given credit for 334 days served. She was also ordered to pay legal fees, restitution, probation fees and $365 in court costs.[[In-content Ad]]
