No calls

Residents of Jay and Adams counties were without out-going long distance and cell phone services for approximately three hours Monday evening.

The issue was a result of cut fiberoptics south of Fort Wayne, senior public affairs manager for Sprint Jack Moore said this morning.

He added that phone services were down from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod said this morning that 911 calls from Jay County residents were automatically routed to Blackford County during the outage.

Life lost

A 28-year-old man from Fort Wayne was one of 16 soldiers killed in a missile attack on a U.S. helicopter in Iraq, The Associated Press reported.

Spec. Brian Penisten’s father, John Penisten, said two Army National Guard officers came to the family home in Fort Wayne on Monday to notify the Penistens that their son had died in the attack Sunday.

John Penisten said his son was a member of the 3rd Armored Cavalry from Fort Carson in Colorado. He said his son enlisted in Army three years ago and was scheduled to be discharged next year.

Brian Penisten graduated from Bishop Dwenger High School, where he had been on the wrestling team.

He was planning to get married in Pueblo, Colo., where his fiancee lives.

Penisten has a 4-year-old son who lives with his mother in Fort Wayne.

A soldier from Wilmington, Ohio, was also killed in the same attack. See story on page 2.
