Cancer fundraiser

Curves of Portland, part of a fitness franchise club, is teaming up with the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser during October.

New members who join between Oct. 8 and 20 will pay a $25 service fee when they make a minimum $25 donation to the American Cancer Society or show proof of a current mammogram.

Current members who make a minimum $25 donation to the cancer society will receive a certificate that will hang at Curves. The certificates can be filled out in honor of or in memory of a person selected by the patron. This also entitles the donator the chance to receive prizes in weekly drawings held throughout the month.

Curves founders Diane and Gary Heavin will donate 10 percent of wholesale sales of all diane fragrance products to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Curves members who purchase the fragrances also will be eligible to receive prizes.

A new era?

A page one article in The Wall Street Journal this week speculated that the Wal-Mart era of retailing is "drawing to a close."

The journal said rival retailers are chipping away at Wal-Mart's business by offering "greater convenience, more selection, higher quality, or better service."[[In-content Ad]]
