Tyson plans Portland expansion

Tyson Mexican Original is expanding its Portland manufacturing facility.
The $5.3 million investment is expected to bring 13 new jobs to the community.
The expansion includes installation of a new corn cook system, which will expand the company’s production capacity in Portland from 2.7 million pounds to 3 million pounds of products per week.
It will expand its current facility to 117,800 square feet across more than 31 acres.
The company will be hiring supervisors, operators and general production associates immediately. And the expanded facility is expected to be operational by mid-September.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Tyson Mexican Original, Inc. up to $50,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. In addition, the city of Portland will consider additional incentives at the request of the Jay County Development Corporation.
Mayor Randy Geesaman said Tyson has been a great partner for the city.
“They have been involved in many community projects and we look forward to their continued investment through new employees and equipment in the city of Portland,” he said.
New Anderson location
The Anderson Redevelopment Commission approved up to $1.8 million in TIF funding for 60th Street infrastructure improvements in support of a new Ivy Tech Community College in Anderson.
The propose d85,000 square foot campus will be located on a 38-acre site on the I-69 corridor on 60th Street.
Mercer Health offers direct access testing
Mercer Health offers Patient Authorized, Direct Access Testing as a means to provide convenient and often less expensive wellness and personal health management opportunities to the community.
The testing does not require a doctor’s order, provides increased opportunities for health management by the patient and operates similarly to a health fair and results are mailed to the patient allowing the patient to consult with his or her physician as appropriate.
The test and screenings are available at the following times and locations:
Laboratory tests (appointments not required) – Mercer County Community Hospital, 800 W. Main St., Coldwater, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Wednesday and from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Saturday; Mercer Health Family Care, 801 Pro Drive, Celina, Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 6 a.m. to noon.
Vascular screenings (appointments required, call 419-678-5112 to schedule) – Mercer County Community Hospital, 800 W. Main St., Coldwater, two Saturdays each month from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Ivy Tech has short semester options
Ivy Tech Community College Northeast is offering a variety of accelerated courses for people who missed the 16-week class deadline or students interested in a shorter semester.
A 12-week semester begins Sept. 16, an eight week semester begins Oct. 14 and four-week semesters begin Sept. 6, Oct. 14 and Nov. 11.
Classes are available in a variety of subjects. For more information, visit IvyTech.edu/northeast/latestart or call admissions at 260-480-4268.

The Jay County Community Center hired two new employees recently. Nathan Helm was hired as the director of development. He is a Ball State graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.
Ted Johnson was hired as the program coordinator. He is a graduate of Brockport with a degree in journalism. He also works as a reporter for The News and Sun in Dunkirk and The Commercial Review.

Muncie ranked 34th in the United States and Anderson ranked 64th for best small places for business by Forbes’ Magazine.
High surgical ranking
IU Health Ball Memorial was one of 10 hospitals statewide to be ranked at the highest level on a five-tier scale in surgical safety by Consumer Reports.
Wind farm tax abatement OK’d
The Randolph County Council approved a 10-year tax abatement on real and personal property for the proposed Headwaters Wind Farm to be operated in Randolph County by EDP Renewables. It will include 100 wind turbines generating an estimated 200 megawatts of electricity.
