A company with local ties has been named “Corporation of the Year” by the Arkansas Regional Minority Supplier Development Council.
Tyson Foods, Inc., based in Springdale, Ark., earned the honor for exceeding standards for corporate diversity.
There is a Tyson Foods Mexican Original plant in Portland.
“Tyson Foods has truly earned the (title); they have not only met but also exceeded standards for corporate diversity,” president and chief executive officer of ARMSDC Charles King said in a press release.
To be selected for the award, minority businesses have to make recommendations to a committee of business owners.
Tyson offers equal opportunity to all potential suppliers of goods and services. The corporation recently hired a female-owned Hispanic company to construct a new Discovery Center and World Headquarters in Springdale.
“We’re honored to receive this award,” Tyson special projects manager Cindy Carr said in the press release. “We believe having a diverse group of supplier partners makes good business sense.”

Vehicles, cash donated
Workhorse Custom Chassis has donated two motor homes, a van and cash to the American Red Cross.
The vehicles are being used by Red Cross officials in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The company also vowed to match whatever monetary donations its employees raised. The workers contributed more than $3,000.
Keeping bills low
Indiana Michigan Power has a few tips to keep energy costs down.
•Insulate: it will keep heat out during the summer and keep heat in during the winter. The higher the R-value, the better it will insulate.
•Check for air leaks. Customers can save up to 10 percent on air conditioning and heating costs with a well-sealed house.
•Maintenance: have equipment checked and cleaned each year to insure maximum efficiency and long life.
•Close chimney damper when not in use. It will save on heating and cooling bills and keep air from going up the chimney.
•Let the sun shine in during the winter on the sunny side of the house, and close drapes and blinds at night to keep the heat in.
•Install a programmable thermostat. It can be pre-set during the winter to lower the temperature while you’re sleeping or at work.
Lowering the temperature from 72 degrees to 65 degrees for eight hours a day can save up to 10 percent on heating bills.
•Lower water temperature. Set the water-heating temperature at 140 degrees.
Also, use hot water wisely, as the water heater typically is the third biggest energy user in the home.
